My Great Outback Adventure - Darwin to Broome

I will be riding my Mountain Bike with a trailer (dubbed the 'Northen Express') solo from Darwin to Broome. I will be starting my journey on the 7th of August and it will take 21 days to travel the 1,900 kms across the top of Australia.

Why am I doing this - My Story

I have kept my secret for 40 years and it has only been in the last 3 years that I have told my story. I was sexually abused in the Navy at Sydney's HMAS Nirimba, a navy training base in the early 1970's when I was 16 years old.

In the last 3 years I have been working with Psychologists, Solicitors and the Government appointed DART (Defense Abuse Response Taskforce) to no longer hide my "secret".

I am doing this ride on my own, a way of putting myself outside 'the comfort zone' and dealing with the demons that still persist in my head from the abuse. I read a small note one day which simply said - "Sometimes, you find yourself in the middle of nowhere; and sometimes, in the middle of nowhere, you find yourself."

I have been told I should talk to young and old about my abuse journey and that I am not completely a broken man and how you get through life having been physically and sexually abused. This bike ride will be my starting point of any talk because there is no way you can start a discussion with any group of people or person about abuse.

You can read more about my story here.

Keep up to date on my journey - My Blog

Every section of the ride will be a little different. I have a 100 mile (sounds easier than writing 160km) day early on in the ride and I will have to ride 4 days over 100kms consecutively.

There will be 5 rest days during the journey. These are for recovery (in a hotel or caravan park - hot showers, oh yeah), repenlishments and repairs... and also time to do some writing, posting photos and maybe even some tourist stuff.

You can follow my jouney here.

Why Bravehearts

The great work of Bravehearts has successfully moved the subject of abuse out of the shadows and into the light. It works hard to empower, educate and protect by providing healing and support, engendering child sexual assault prevention and protection strategies; advocating for understanding and promoting increased education and research.

I think it is a great organisation.
