Thanks so much for sponsoring me on my bike ride for the 2016 Go Pink Breast Cancer Ride & Run. I am honored to ride for such a good cause.

Lots of people in my life have struggled (and are struggling with) breast cancer. Muriel (oh yes, I remember). Lorraine, my sweet childhood friend. Momma Annette. Channyn's Aunt Cathy. My cousin, Mary Ann. Laura and her own momma. Katie at work. My client, J., who was diagnosed after I decided to participate in this race and who passed before the race actually happened. I think of them all and all of their incredible stories and I am truly awestruck by their courage, their determination to overcome, and their love of life. I will be thinking about each of them when I ride.

Breast cancer really came home for me, though, when my friend Barbara Jean was first diagnosed. Barbie and I have been friends for something like 40 years. We went to high school together and college. We had our first fast food jobs together. I taught her how to parallel park. :) We have traveled through relationships and motherhood together. We have been wildly inconspicuous over the years. Don't ask me about the time that she laid down her life for me because I will start to cry.

Over the years, Barbie and I would joke that "we do everything together." True, that would explain why, after years of feigning no interest in the fiber arts, Barbie now has something like 700 pounds of raw alpaca fiber and another equally tawdry amount of raw silk in her basement (You're welcome, Ed).  And that was why, year after year, Barb would drag me to Wende's and we would have our mammograms together. It seemed like a good excuse to go out for margaritas and we did just that until that one year when it wasn't so much fun; the year she was first diagnosed. I felt like I was kicked in the stomach and I can only imagine how she felt. And, since then, Barbie has struggled. She has had two separate diagnoses in a short amount of time. She has survived radiation and surgery and chemo and drugs. She was amazing through it all and I am so grateful that she is well today.

So, Barbie, I tip my hat to you. I am so proud of you. I think you are Phoenix brave and I am honored and excited to ride this ride with you.

But, I have to tell all of you, I am not a biker by profession. In fact, until September of 2016, it is safe to say that I hadn't successfully sat on a bike (or made it move forward) since I was 10 and that was a very (very) long time ago. Ten miles seems like a double marathon! I am super glad that Barbie is loaning me her recumbent trike, but I am here to tell you – it will certainly be a challenge for me.

I hope you will consider donating to me and the greater SpinSomeMore team. We are going to have a lot of fun and we need your support.  Please click on the Sponsor Me link below to make a donation, or search for my team, the SpinSomeMore Triker Gang, by clicking on the Find a Team/Participant button to the right.
