Head Start Awarded New, Five-Year Grant

The Community House’s Head Start program marks its 38th year, located at the agency’s main campus at 227 Elm Street.
The 2015-16 school year began on August 27 with a total of 144 children in eight classrooms. The new five year grant focuses on stringent accountability in the areas of governance, evidence based curriculum, collection and use of data for planning, increased parental engagement, and the articulation of school readiness goals and alignment with the Lead Educational Agency, the West Haven Board of Education.
Head Start, which is licensed by the state of Connecticut, provides a high quality, comprehensive early learning environment to prepare pre-school children for success in school and in life.
More than 4,000 West Haven pre-schoolers have attended Head Start school readiness program since its inception in the city in 1978, where only 11 children attended the school year program.

School is Back In Session

For six weeks over the summer, 55 children from Kindergarten through 6th grade enjoyed field trips and fun activities at our Summer Program at Molloy School.
Now, more than 200 students are enrolled in our before and after school care program for the 2015-16 school year that is provided at six West Haven neighborhood schools; Carrigan, Mackrille, Molloy, Pagels, Savin Rock, Seth Haley and Washington. Teachers and students alike are looking forward to another fun-filled year of individual and group activities, free time, and social interaction.

75th Anniversary News
Recognize anyone in this picture taken in 1986? In preparation for our 75th anniversary celebration in 2016, we are seeking comments and remembrances from anyone who has ever participated in a program or activity sponsored or run by the Community House since its founding in 1941.
We are also calling on all volunteers who may be interested in our anniversary events planning.

Tennis Anyone?
Clients from our SMILE's program visited the CT Open last month at the CT Tennis Center at Yale. They  enjoyed watching tennis and participating in the activities.  The highlight for one client was getting a photo with Matt Scott from Fox CT News.
