Mission Monthly
March 2014
This week has highlighted our shared mission to be witnesses of the Gospel. Yesterday, we recalled how Mary trusted in the Lord completely and began a journey that would take her to the foot of her son's cross where she became our mother. On Monday, we marked the 34th anniversary of the assasination of Archbishop Oscar Romero who followed the footsteps of Jesus as he called for justice for the poor in his own life. As we prepare for this year's Mission Conference, Gospel Justice: A Living Challenge for the Church in Mission, may we follow the examples of Mary and Archbishop Romero who showed how important living Gospel Justice is for the Church and the world.

We hope you enjoy this edition of the Mission Monthly and we pray that these final weeks of Lent will be full of prayer and preparation for the joy of Easter.

Accompanying Pope Francis on Mission

On a Mission in the Land of the Taliban with Pope Francis
Quetta (Agenzia Fides) - The mission in Quetta in the Baluchistan region, inaccessible land where Taliban militants groups are hiding, continues "in the company of Pope Francis". This is what Fr. Renald Lawrence, of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), Attorney of the Apostolic Vicariate of Quetta says to Fides Agency. A year after his election, the missionary explains: "The encouragement pronounced by the Pope: go, do not be afraid and serve thy neighbor, has touched us deeply. Read more here.
Honoring Missionary Martyrs Day

24 March, Day of Missionary Martyrs: Like Them, We Are All "Witnesses" of the Gospel
Rome (Agenzia Fides) - Founded in 1993 by the Missionary Youth Movement of the Italian Pontifical Mission Societies, on the anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar A. Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador (March 24, 1980), the Day of prayer and fasting in memory of the Missionary Martyrs is commemorated. The initiative is now extended to many countries, even on different dates and circumstances: many dioceses and religious institutes dedicate special initiatives to commemorate their missionaries and all those who shed their blood for the Gospel. Called to Living Justly

"Do Justice": the Indian Church Next to the Weakest
Patna ( Agenzia Fides) - The defense of the rights of the most vulnerable is a priority for the Church: is what His Exc. Mgr. William D' Souza, Archbishop of Patna, the capital of the Indian state of Bihar said during a workshop on the Social Doctrine of the Church organized by the "Justice, peace and Development Commission" of the Bishops' Conference of India. As reported to Fides, the Bishop urged the faithful to "an active commitment to justice". Quoting the prophet Micah, he recalled the phrase "do justice, love mercy", saying that this enlightens Christians on how to respond to the "signs of the times". Read more here.
Heavy Rains and Disaster in Bolivia

Heavy Rains Have Caused Deaths and Injuries in the Beni Area, the Lack of Food is Worrying
Beni (Agenzia Fides) - Many families are still isolated in the Beni area, due to heavy rains. Fides is in contact with some missionaries who, through social networks, are able to inform us on the terrible situation that this area of Bolivia is experiencing. Parishes have become service centers and missionaries are trying by all means to help the families most affected, even if there are no material resources. In the last three weeks there have been 59 deaths and 60,000 homeless. Read more here.
Solidarity with Syria

"A Just Peace! "Church's Solidarity With the People of Syria
New Delhi (Agenzia Fides) - "Three years of conflict in Syria have literally devastated and destroyed your life and your dreams. More than 100,000 lives have been lost, thousands of maimed and wounded are dying of hunger, millions of people have had to flee the country. Our heart goes out to you, to the entire civilian population, in particular women, children and the elderly who are the most vulnerable victims of violence. In the midst of this blind violence, your hearts are yearning for peace and hope. We want to show you our solidarity and we pray sincerely": reads the heartfelt appeal by the "Justice, peace and development" Commission in the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, and sent to Fides Agency.
The text, signed by Fr. Charles Irudayam recalls Pope Francis’ exhortation of peace, during a prayer vigil for peace in Syria, on September 7, 2013. The Indian Church urges to "replace the language of death, which is violence, "with the language of love and life", which is spoken by Jesus Christ, the conqueror of sin and death. "His resurrection confirms our hope that life will triumph over death, peace and war", notes the appeal sent to Fides. Calling for "a just peace for Syria", the text concludes: "May all those who are responsible for the current situation, make choices of peace! May God, the author and the source of true peace, guide the hearts of leaders because the time has come to renounce violence and give peace a chance". (PA) (Agenzia Fides 12/03/2014)
