Are you ready for 2018?
Dear ,
Happy New Year to all our wonderful festival friends!
The 2018 Festival launch will take place on Tuesday 6 March at 5pm in C2 at the Townsville Civic Theatre, and we're so excited to reveal it to you. We will send more details, including how to purchase tickets, next week.
Membership is a great way of supporting the Festival, and addition, there are a range of benefits, including an exclusive three week booking period, before tickets are released for public sale. The AFCM relies heavily on the support of our members and we are especially grateful to those members who provide a top-up donation when applying for membership.
The booking brochure is off to print. If you would like a copy of the 2018 Booking Brochure sent to you electronically instead of via the post, please email
We can't wait to share more with you soon,
The AFCM Team.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you have all had a wonderful festive season and enjoyed time with family and friends. It’s so difficult for us Northerners to think of Christmas in those sizzling temperatures, but wherever we are, it’s a good moment to stop, recharge the batteries and catch up with the world.
I’m currently on the train whizzing through the English countryside to attend Piers Lane’s big birthday concert in London. I’m sure that on behalf of all at AFCM, we wish him the happiest of birthdays!
Otherwise, it’s back to the piano for me and in a few weeks I’ll perform Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.1 with the BBC Philharmonic and Sir Andrew Davies. Following this will be a recital tour in the UK and, as usual, many visits to Oslo to work with my students.
With the New Year comes the reality that my first festival for AFCM is not quite so far away. Have you any idea how excited I am? One of the hardest things in this role is keeping secrets and I am bursting at the seams to share all the wonderful artists coming together in July. However, musicians aside, I’m really curious to hear some of the music which I’ve programmed ‘live’ - as it happens - experiencing it for myself: reacting, embracing, moving on, or going in for second helpings.
Festivals like AFCM remind me that it’s not about me, my predecessor or the founder; it’s about the collective experience of musicians, music, composers, staff, Board, volunteers and you - the audience. We’re all part of this bigger picture which serves the festival. Long may that continue!
Warmest regards,
Townsville Shines in July

Concert Conversations
Moving to a bigger venue
Concert Conversations is moving to our new platinum sponsor, the Ville Resort and Casino.  Opening in March, The Pavilion is Townsville's newest and premier venue for functions, with state of the art equipment, 2-4 meter ceilings and wrap around terrace space looking out onto Magnetic Island and gorgeous resort grounds, the venue is truly breathtaking. Having been at maximum capacity at C2 for several years, the move allows us to open these popular experiences to a wider audience. The Ville Resort and Casino has undergone extensive refurbishment over the past 18 months. Previously the festival had a long standing relationship with the hotel and we are excited to have them back on board as a Platinum sponsor. Stay tuned for more information as another special event will also be hosted at the Ville!

Fond Memories
I’m often asked what I like most about Townsville. Well, on all of my visits the very first thing I do, is head for the Strand. It always takes my breath away with its magnificent views of Magnetic Island, swaying palms and beautiful beach.
I like to stop half way, take a coffee, look out to sea and just take some deep breaths. Last year I finally made it onto Magnetic Island rather than just see it from the distance. What a beauty! We are all truly spoilt to have this for a festival location.

1RAR in concert
The band of the First Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, is made up of a group of exceptional professional musicians who are based in Townsville's Lavarack Barracks. In concert, the band performs their own contemporary versions of classic hits; from the stylings of the Basie and Daly-Wilson big bands to something more along the lines of McCartney and Lennon & everything in between.
Artistic Director Double Delight
A double concerto premier and Bolero’s unstoppable energy with artistic directors present and past - Kathryn Stott & Piers Lane! Three colourful works frame Carl Vine’s concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra, given its world premier in Perth this May. This is a once in a lifetime performance that should not be missed - tickets are on sale now!
Sponsorship of the AFCM is a great way to reach a large group of loyal and sophisticated potential customers. It’s also a great way of aligning your brand with a well-established brand that makes a significant contribution to the economic and cultural impact for the region. There are several levels of Sponsorship and sponsorships may be cash or in-kind support, or a combination of both.
