A message from Artistic Director
Kathryn Stott
I hope you all had a happy Easter.  We are now ever nearer to the festival and it’s already good to hear that following the launch last month, response to the program is generating great ticket sales - fantastic news!
During my few days in Townsville, it was really good to be staying at The Ville and have the perfect opportunity to check out the Pavilion where all our Concert Conversations will take place. This is a brand new contemporary space with a beautiful outside terrace and I’m sure many of you are going to enjoy this new addition to our festival venues.
I’m very excited to also be using it for the Cleveland Bay Supper Club concert and was reminded of this event recently whilst working on Ravel’s sublime Sonata for violin and piano. Karen Gomyo and Timothy Young already have this in their repertoire since I suggested they work together last year, so I already know they are happy to revisit this for AFCM. Amazing Australian soprano Siobhan Stagg has selected a delicious collection of Gershwin songs for us and I know first-hand that JP Jofre’s Tango set is going to be quite something. I played some of these in New York with him a few years ago and I was blown away by his energy and originality.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who are financially supporting artists this year; it means such a lot and I personally am very grateful. Best wishes, Kathy.
Chamber Chat
JP Jofre - Bandoneon (Argentina)
We are pleased to welcome to Australia for the very first time one of Argentina's leading Bandoneon players. Now based in New York, JP Jofre has been repeatedly highlighted by the NY Times and praised as one of today's leading artists by Great Performers at the Lincoln Center. He is also an esteemed composer and this year we are privileged to not only hear him perform, but also hear 9 works that he has composed – two will be World premieres and seven will be Australian premieres
Q. For those who havent experienced the bandoneon before, what can they expect? One of the most penetrating and touching sounds that transpose you to another dimension.
Q. This is your first trip to Australia - what are you most looking forward to? Sharing my music and connect with the audience and the fantastic festival’s artists and team, explore the city by walking around.
Q. What was your big breakthrough moment? Musically speaking, the recording of my album Manifiesto. Personally: when my daughter was born.
Q. What is your fondest musical memory? When I sat on my couch for the first time and composed my very first piece I realized I had something to say.
Q. In a movie of your life, who plays you? A composer, an artist, a thinker, a me.
Support an Artist
Amazing Artists available
Each year the Festival brings musicians to Townsville from all over the world. The expense is considerable and ticket sales alone do not cover the costs. By supporting an Artist you not only contribute greatly towards funding these fine musicians, but you will also enjoy a wonderful experience of meeting and potentially developing a lifelong friendship with an artist! There are opportunities to support Australian or overseas based musicians. Financial contributions can be treated as tax-deductible donations. For more information visit our website or contact Justin Ankus by phoning 07 4771 4144.
Opportunity for Young Ensembles
Winterschool Applications open
Applications are currently open for AFCM’s prestigious Winterschool program. This year the program will be led by Pavel Fischer, a world-renowned violinist, composer and tutor at the Royal National College of Music in Manchester. High school ensembles are strongly encouraged to take part in the two-day Junior Winterschool Workshop, to gain access to coaching and development at an international level. The program aims to assist students in identifying and accomplishing their musical goals and is not to be missed! Students will also get to showcase their newly enhanced skills in a concert at St James' Cathedral.
