I’m writing this to you from Perth where I’m here to give the world premiere of Carl Vine’s Concerto for 2 pianos. At a moment like this, I’m reminded of the great creative spirit that composers have. I’m sure many of us sometimes forget that every piece we’ve ever heard or performed, was once both contemporary and unknown. One of the many things I love about AFCM is that we can program unknown jewels alongside well-loved treasures. I first heard Julian Yu’s music some years ago, actually in my home city of Manchester and always remembered it as being fresh, inventive and accessible. I’m so happy he will be our composer in residence this year. Here is a composer who has transcended his Chinese origins, integrated them into Western culture and created his own individual voice as one of Australia’s leading composers. When I get back home I’ll be working on his Piano Trio which I’m so much looking forward to playing with Grace Clifford and Howard Penny at this year’s AFCM. One of his pieces will connect into the 2019 festival, but you’ll need to be at both to find out just what that means!
Warmest regards,

AFCM Winterschool Alumni
Wendy Yuan
We recently caught up with Wendy Yuan to ask her about her experience as a Winterschool student in 2017.
Q. Describe your experiences & highlights of AFCM Winterschool? To receive coaching from famous musicians and to be able to attend concerts throughout the festival, listen to amazing repertoire & observe incredible live music. It is also an excellent opportunity to network with other young emerging musicians from around Australia who share a similar passion for Chamber Music. After attending the AFCM Winterschool I've found more motivation to be a better musician, and am more in love with music.  Also, Townsville is a lovely place.
Applications for both Junior & Advanced Winterschool close soon.  Don't miss out.
Families' Concert
This year’s Families' Concert is not just for the children but everyone. Ahoy! Sing for the Mary Rose tells the story of Henry VIII’s battleship. It features arrangements of well-known tunes from Henry VIII’s time and sea shanties as well as a new composition to tell this dramatic tale. Choirs of all ages and experience are welcome as an ensemble. Singers are also to welcome to join as individuals. It’s not too late to join the fun.
Artist Sponsorship
Each year the Festival brings musicians to Townsville from all over the world. The expense is considerable and ticket sales alone do not cover the costs. By supporting an Artist you not only contribute greatly towards funding these fine musicians, but you will also enjoy a wonderful experience of meeting and potentially developing a lifelong friendship with an artist!  Financial contributions can be treated as tax-deductible donations.
Orchestral Transcriptions
AFCM Artistic Director Kathryn Stott joins the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) for a delightful concert celebrating the music of Claude Debussy. Featuring La Mer and Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune arranged for 2 pianos, plus Debussy’s Cello Sonata. Orchestral Transcriptions, 11am Wednesday 16 May at ANAM in the South Melbourne Town Hall (includes complimentary morning tea).
Implacable Gifts
Artistic Directors past and present, Piers Lane and Kathryn Stott, come together with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra to give the world premiere of Carl Vine’s Implacable Gifts - Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra. This will be an unforgettable orchestral experience, including Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and Ravel’s hypnotic Boléro.
