A message from Kathryn Stott
Hello and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope you have all had the most wonderful break and feel refreshed – ready for an exciting year ahead. As we’re now in 2019, the Festival doesn't seem quite so far away and as the launch happens next month, all will be revealed soon enough!

Keeping musical secrets is not something I enjoy, so I can’t wait to visit Australia in February to get the ball rolling. I’ll be visiting Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and, of course, Townsville to do some serious shouting from the rooftops. I’ve recently returned to the piano after a short break and turned my attention to a couple of chamber pieces I’m learning especially for the Festival. One of them has already given me goosebumps and reminded me that behind so many of the pieces we will experience together, there are incredible stories to be told. Aren’t we all lucky to be such musical explorers?

Planning ORIGINS has been an adventure in itself and I look forward to bringing this Festival to life very soon. Seeing it on paper is one thing, but I want the emotional reality to take you by the arm and whisk you thousands of miles around the globe – into both past and present.

Well, talking of travel, I’ve just returned from a remarkable trip to Vietnam and soon set off for snowy Oslo to see what my students have been up to. As I’m having a concert sabbatical this season, I won’t pick up my performances for a few months yet, but look forward to reconnecting with Yo-Yo Ma in Scandinavia and Germany for some recitals besides festival appearances for myself in Sweden and Denmark.

So it’s a new year and do you know where it will bring us together? Townsville! The wind is howling in Manchester right now, but if I close my eyes, I can see palm trees on the Strand and Magnetic Island; hear you all chatting outside the Civic; see you supporting the Winterschool students; but most of all, I see your faces looking up to the stage in eager anticipation. What a wonderful picture!
Supporting the Festival
'Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves’ - I hear my grandmother’s advice decades later, she also checked my homework (spelling and arithmetic) and made brilliant apricot jam. Any dollars and cents donated to the AFCM make a huge difference to our budget and ability to deliver the Festival and every donation is received with gratitude and appreciation.

From a simple, modest donation to topping up your AFCM Friends registration to supporting the cost of bringing brilliant musicians to Townsville it all helps and you become part of the fabric of the Festival. Artistic Director Kathryn Stott programs between 100 and 120 works for performance, I figure a donation of $100 is a $1 towards each work! Donations or $2 of more are tax deductible.

Please contact me on 07 4771 4144 if you have any questions or would like to a make donation.

Where to stay in Townsville

Townsville offers a range of accommodation to suit all budgets, from four-star hotels to self-catering apartments and budget accommodation. We recommend staying at a Festival partner property, including The Ville Resort & Casino along the breakwater, Quest Townsville, Rydges Southbank and Park Regis Anchorage along Palmer Street with its many cafes and restaurants and close proximity to the theatre, or the Grand Chancellor located in the CBD. Remember, winter is peak season in Townsville so it’s best to book your accommodation early. Don’t forget you can also book a Festival Holiday package and have all the work done for you. To Gold or to Gold Plus...
that is the question!
The answer depends on whether you wish to attend every event including the special events. If so, then go for a Gold Plus as it includes all 22 concerts in the main program plus the three special events – Cleveland Bay Concert, Orpheus Island Concert and AFCM After Party on Magnetic Island. If you’re not sure about any of the special events, then purchase a Gold subscription which includes the 22 concerts in the main program. You can always add one of the special events separately. Both Gold and Gold Plus include the Exclusive Gold Subscriber Event, a complimentary program, bag and invitation to the Opening Night VIP function. And both allow you to add on bus transfers. Find out more here.
