26 July - 4 August 2019
Hello from Sunny Townsville!

Many of you would have read about the catastrophic floods that have taken place over the last couple of weeks, caused by unprecedented rain and the opening of all three Ross River Dam gates to full capacity.

Thank you to all of you who called and sent messages during this time. Whilst the government declared Townsville a state of emergency, thankfully the AFCM team escaped major damage to property and were able to continue to work through that terrible time.

Unfortunately a lot of Townsville businesses and families were not as lucky and whole suburbs have been completely devastated. In the affected areas, the people of Townsville have been volunteering to help clean up.
One positive that has come out of this event, is our community spirit and the camaraderie that the people of Townsville have shown.

On a brighter note, tickets for individual concerts along with 5 and 10 Concert Passes are now on sale for AFCM Friends. See below for more information.

Kathryn Stott will be back in Australia in less than 9 days to launch her fabulous new program themed "Origins". The Townsville Launch will be held on Tuesday 5 March from 6pm for a 6.30 start at The Ville Resort - Casino. We hope to see all our Townsville patrons there, invitations to follow.

Warm regards

The AFCM Team

GIVIT Queensland Floods appeal
The Board of AFCM has decided to give something back to the community in the form of a donation of $5000 from the company’s financial reserves to GIVIT’s Queensland Floods appeal, which is endorsed by the Queensland Government and Townsville City Council. All funds donated go directly to purchasing essential items from local providers to assist those most in need. We invite AFCM supporters to do the same and make a donation via this link and select Queensland Flooding from the drop down menu.
Concert Passes & Single Tickets on Sale Now
AFCM Friends enjoy a host of benefits, not least of which is the opportunity to purchase tickets ahead of public release. AFCM Friends have been able to buy Gold and Gold Plus subscriptions for 2 months already, but now they can also purchase single tickets to any concert in the Festival, including special events.

Or take advantage of our new five and 10 concert passes, saving 10% on the full ticket price. The passes are a terrific option if you can’t stay for the full 10 days and want to load up on concerts over a shorter period of time. Alternatively, spread your selection out and enjoy some rest and relaxation in between – the choice is yours. Simply choose any five or 10 concerts from the main program (excludes the three special events) and automatically enjoy 10% off the total. Find out more
Townsville Attractions
Beyond the music, there is much on offer in Townsville, so be sure to visit places like The Strand, Jezzine Barracks, the Wetlands, Reef HQ and the Museum of Tropical Queensland. Further afield are fabulous attractions too, so why not hire a car and go exploring? A 90 minute drive north will get you to TYTO wetlands with an abundance of birds and wildlife; a 45 minute drive west will have you at the historic Heritage Tea Rooms(pictured above) providing stunning views as you drive up Herveys Range; or head 20 minutes south and visit Billabong Sanctuary, a wonderful Australian animal wildlife park. There’s also Crystal Creek and Saunders Beach both north of Townsville or the Cape Pallarenda Conservation park which is just 15 minutes from the CBD. Find out more
Advanced Winterschool Applications now open
AFCM’s Advanced Masterclass Program is now open for applications.

Young emerging ensembles have the opportunity to gain access to some of the world's leading chamber musicians for lessons, masterclasses, mentoring and concerts. During AFCM there are often unexpected performance opportunities available to students.

In 2018 the Stanley Street Quartet from the Queensland Conservatorium were invited to perform in the World premiere of ‘Being Mrs Bach’. The quartet got to rehearse, sound check and perform on stage with a world-class line up including the Kees Boersma, the Goldner String Quartet and Daniel de Borah.

Rose Chaffey from the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Fine Arts and Music also got a late call up to perform with AFCM’s cello octet when one of the members had to depart unexpectedly. Rose performed Monty Norman’s 007 in the Festival Farewell concert with an all-star line of up cellists including Istvan Vardai, Guy Johnston, Julian Smiles and ANAM’s Howard Penny.

In 2019 there will be a number of exciting performance opportunities available for students. AFCM’s Advanced Masterclass program is affordable, educational and potentially life-changing.

A message from Executive Director, Gavin Findlay
I’ve now been a resident in the beautiful city of Townsville for nearly 6 months – and am very happy I made the decision to come here. AFCM is a great organisation as well as a great Festival and I’m proud to have been given the opportunity to manage it.

This year the AFCM Annual General meeting will take place immediately prior to the Townsville Launch. I have written to all members separately, but this provides further written notice to members as well as other supporters.
