Recognising the value of friendships
As the weather warms up nicely here in Townsville, and we fast approach the holiday season, we wanted to pause to reflect on the value of friends. We had the good fortune earlier this month to welcome back Piers Lane, a very dear friend indeed. In honour of the music teachers in our region, Piers visited Townsville for two days before making his way back to London, and treated us to a special evening recital and a memorable morning Piano Masterclass and Q&A. We also want to acknowledge our volunteers - valuable friends who make your Festival experience richer. Good friend and incoming Artistic Director, Jack Liebeck, is also in our minds this month as he finalises the 2022 Festival program (so exciting!) - plus, he has just released a wonderful new album, find out more below. Finally, long-time ally John Crawford, whom many of you will know as an expert producer and presenter from his ABC days, officially joined our team last month taking up the position of Executive Producer. John will relocate from Sydney to Townsville early in the New Year.
Of course, you are also our most important friends and we can't wait to welcome you back to Townsville next July. We will definitely make up for the two year hiatus with some very special treats for you. In the meantime, don't forget to sign up as an AFCM Friend so that you can enjoy early access to the 2022 Program and artist line-up, as well as purchase tickets a month ahead of everyone else - see more below.
Stay safe, stay well. We are observing the lifting of restrictions in southern states with excitement and hope you can all enjoy some long-awaited time with family and friends. They are indeed music that feeds our souls!
Warm regards,
The AFCM Team.

Behind the Scenes with Piers Lane & John Crawford
People are often surprised when they find out just how much work goes into planning a Festival that ‘exists’ for only 10 days a year. Here at the AFCM we are deep in production mode, working with our Artistic Director Jack Liebeck to secure all the artists, venues and sponsors; and putting Jack's exciting new concepts and initiatives for 2022 into action. We have some wonderful plans up our sleeves, and will reveal them in the new year.
We are also delighted to have John Crawford onboard full-time now as the AFCM’s Executive Producer.  John worked at the ABC for 33 years as ABC Classic Network Manager, before that as a music producer, a presenter and immediately prior to retirement, as the Live Music Director with oversight of the hundreds of music recordings for the Network. John and his partner Tim are keen scuba divers and looking forward to exploring the numerous underwater sites off the richly diverse North Queensland coast.
More recently our organisation celebrated the music teachers of our region through a special recital and masterclass with world renowned, Australian classical pianist Piers Lane. Piers returned to Townsville for the occasion to honour the often unsung heroes of our industry, delighting everyone who has known and loved him as a previous Artistic Director of the AFCM.
Thankyou Jack, Piers and John for being part of the AFCM family. x

  Support the AFCM Future Fund
A final target of $12,500  - we can do this!
Our 2021 Future Fund Campaign hasn't made it's full target. It is aspirational to say the least but we are big dreamers. Let's trim our sails, if we can raise $12,500 by the end of this year we will have managed to get the Future Fund to $400,000 - an incredible milestone for us. So, if you were thinking to support AFCM, wondered did we need it, or want to make a difference in the year that it really counts, we will welcome you with open arms and our chamber music loving hearts.
Here's the challenge, let's raise $12,500 by December 2021 - we can do it! You can donate here or contact Sue Hackett, Philanthropy Manager on 07 4771 4144 or via Email. Thank you and onwards!

Jack Liebeck Album out now
Our new Artistic Director has not only been busy finalising the 2022 Festival program but has also just released his latest album Ysaye, which received a stunning 5* review in The Times " every track Liebeck excels in capturing the fury, poetry, madness and dazzle of Ysaÿe’s haunting music." You can read an interview with Gramophone here, listen to a podcast of Jack with The Strad here or listen to the full album.
Theodore Kuchar Scholarship
It’s that time of year again for the Theodore Kucher Scholarship auditions and we are looking forward to seeing the amazing young talent we have here in Townsville. Auditions are this Saturday, with the successful applicant announced next Monday 18th of October. With thanks to Townsville City Council, the winner receives $4,000 for music tuition and professional development.
QSO celebrates 75 years
2022 is all about uniting and delighting audiences and that’s exactly what the QSO season looks like for next year. In a packed season that includes 10 Maestro concerts, world premieres by Australian composers, a regional touring program and an education series, the QSO is well-positioned to celebrate its 75 years of music making. What’s more, some of their musicians might even make appearances at AFCM 2022!
