Tickets on sale now
Dear
This is it! We can now unveil the full Festival program and you can now purchase tickets to the 2020 Australian Festival of Chamber Music.
The program is packed with musical treats including four world premieres, 11 Australian premieres, 2 exclusive commissions, 21 concerts, five special events and six free events! What’s more we have more musicians than ever before joining our 30th anniversary celebrations in Townsville this July.
Our Artistic Director Kathryn Stott has themed it ‘Carnival’ and is excited with the mix of music spanning centuries and continents and recognising the 250th anniversary of Beethoven and the 25th anniversary of the Festival quartet-in-residence the Goldner String Quartet.
The first of our two commissions has Deborah Cheetham AO writing a work in the indigenous language of the Wulgurukaba people as acknowledgment of their culture and the land on which the Festival resides. The piece will be performed on Opening Night by Deborah, Peter Coleman-Wright and the Goldner String Quartet. Our second commission in celebration of the Goldner's 25 years will see 25 of their favourite Australian composers writing variations to Beethoven's Ode to Joy, all to be performed by the Goldners at the Governor's Gala concert on Opening Weekend.
The line-up of musicians is also spectacular. We have 47 artists performing over the 10 days, with four performing in Australia for the very first time. They include young British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason who shot to fame globally after performing at the wedding of Harry and Meghan in May 2018, American violinist Tai Murray, Finnish cellist Jan-Erik Gustafsson and Japan’s Yumi Kurosawa who plays the enchanting 13-stringed Koto, a traditional instrument of Japan.
Other musicians in the line-up include British flute player Adam Walker, violinists Alexander Sitkovetsky (Russia), Amalia Hall (NZ), and Lise Berthaud (France) and pianist Marianna Shirinyan (Denmark). Some of the Australian artists include bassist Kirsty McCahon, Zoe Black (violin), Tobias Breider (viola), Mark Gaydon (bassoon), James Crabb (accordion), Lloyd Van’t Hoff (clarinet), Timothy Young (piano), the Tinalley String Quartet, the Nexas Saxophone Quartet and internationally applauded didgeridoo star William Barton. See the full Artist line-up here.
There are five special events in this year’s program including a day trip to Palm Island, Sunday morning’s Cleveland Bay Concert, the Future Stars Special, An Afternoon with Petroc Trelawny and the AFCM After Party on Magnetic Island. Find out more about all of these wonderful events here.
