We also have a very special offer from Crittenden Wines, our new Platinum sponsors who supplied gorgeous wine for our launches a couple of weeks ago.  It's a fantastic offer - so don't miss out!
Warm regards,

Hello Dear Friends!
I’ve had the most wonderful time in Australia launching the Festival program and there is so much excitement in the air that the music can’t start soon enough!
One of the anniversaries I spoke about was that of Ludwig van Beethoven. It is 250 years since he arrived into the world and one can safely say he changed the musical planet forever. As we are a festival of great diversity, I’ve chosen to celebrate in a rather special way, shying away from back to back Beethoven.
Apart from original works featured in the Festival, I’m thrilled that 25 fantastic Australian composers have taken up the challenge of each writing a variation on the iconic theme "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. This will be called The Goldner Variations and is a present to our Quartet-in-Residence to celebrate the 25th anniversary. There are also references to Beethoven’s music in works such as Metamorphosen by Strauss, Auf dem Strom by Schubert and Hummel’s sparkling Piano Trio. On 6th August, the whole day will resonate around Beethoven including works both musical and literary inspired by his great genius and beyond. Jessica Duchen returns after the resounding success of Being Mrs Bach with her new creation Immortal Beloved. In the quest for answers to Beethoven’s enigmatic romance, this performance features storytelling, songs, and excerpts from the Piano Sonatas and Quartets. The song cycle An die ferne Geliebte will act as a catalyst for Roderick Williams’ new commission and Dancenorth create a choreography entitled Control in response to Tolstoy’s novella The Kreutzer Sonata - but dancing to Beethoven’s Allegretto from the 7th Symphony. Fun!
‘What you are, you are by accident of birth; what I am, I am by myself. There are and will be a thousand princes; there is only one Beethoven.’
Can’t wait to see you all in July!

An Afternoon with Petroc Trelawny
Tuesday 4th August 2020
As many of you know, the middle Tuesday of the Festival is a rest day for our hard-working musicians, and a good opportunity for you to catch your breath too! We usually offer a number of options for how to spend your day, including a few sightseeing tours (see those options here) .
But this event is a wonderful choice as it gives you the morning to relax before a very pleasant afternoon tea overlooking the Rockpool and Cleveland Bay, all the while spending it with the charismatic, charming and hugely knowledgeable Petroc Trelawny.
Petroc is a popular personality on BBC Radio 3 where he hosts the Morning program. For us he is imagining himself cast away on a deserted island, with only a handful of his favourite recordings. What would they be and why? Listen to the pieces on disc and hear about his selection as he chats to Artistic Director Kathryn Stott. He will also entertain you with tales of his life’s adventures, and what life is like both behind the microphone and in front of the camera.  Adults $55, AFCM Friends $50.

Under Pavel's leadership the Winterschool has flourished to include a new Junior masterclass program in local Townsville schools, more public performances, a professional development program for Winterschool alumni, and an outreach program in the region. This year that outreach program heads to Ayr and Ravenswood, with 2019 Winterschool alumni the Griffith Duo from Brisbane, conducting workshops alongside Pavel.
