Mentor/Mentee Spotlight
By Chelsey Keesy
I had a great time sitting down with mentor/mentee duo Susan and Kate and they spoke animatedly to me about each other and BCB.  Susan and Kate were paired in October 2014 through the mentoring component of our Peer Support Program. Susan and Kate became fast friends, saying they feel like they’ve known each other all their lives and feel like sisters. Susan joined BCB about 10 years ago after she lost her vision suddenly. Susan says, “I knew from the beginning I couldn’t hide under the covers. I started searching for ways to make it better.” Kate is a newer member, joining us in August 2014 after moving to Lexington.
Susan and Kate both enjoy the social aspect of BCB. They like that our meetings are informative and both believe socializing with other people who are blind and visually impaired is a really good thing. They both say they’ve met really nice people. Outside of BCB’s group meetings each month, Kate and Susan talk or get together almost every day. They share tips and tricks with each other about getting around with low vision and appreciate having each other to talk to.
We’re proud to share Susan and Kate’s success story. The mentoring component was added in January 2014 after staff decided there was a need to have one-on-one peer support. Currently we have 5 pairs of active mentors and mentees and the relationships are beneficial to all people involved. The program was designed to help deal with the stressful and often overwhelming aspects associated with vision loss, to help ease anxiety, and facilitate a successful transition to living with vision loss and we’re happy to say we’re succeeding.
