Advocacy and Awareness in October

Every October, CADA joins partners, supporters, and allies across the state and country to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a time to mourn those who have died because of domestic violence and celebrate those who have survived. Every October, communities have the opportunity to take a stand against domestic violence.

According to Violence Free Minnesota (formerly MCBW – Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women), in 2018, there were a total of 14 victims of domestic-related homicide in Minnesota. 10 people were killed by their current or former partners, nine of whom identified as women. Other victims were friends or family members murdered in domestic violence-related situations.

Sometimes it can be challenging to know if you are in an abusive relationship. The more we talk about the facts and the red flags of relationship violence, the easier it will be for victims to be able to reach out and find support. Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a time for survivors to connect with and hear from other people who have been in similar situations and were able to make it to the other side.

One in four women and one in seven men will experience relationship violence in their lifetime. Chances are, we all know someone who has been impacted by violence. That is why it is important for everyone to get involved! This is the time to speak out against violence and speak out in support of survivors!
