CADA's 40 Year History

On November 5, 1979, three members of the Committee Against Domestic Abuse signed the articles of incorporation and CADA was founded. The goal was to provide safety to women and children experiencing domestic violence in the area. The original mission statement of Committee Against Domestic Abuse was, "to alleviate the problem of domestic violence in the communities of South Central Minnesota."

In 1981, thanks to the funding and support from the community, the doors to CADA's first shelter opened. The CADA House shelter was a four-bedroom home on 2nd Street in Mankato. CADA House could provide shelter for up to ten women and children at a time.

Today, the face of CADA looks different than it did 40 years ago. We have grown, and adapted because of the needs of our neighbors and communities. We now serve people of all genders and ages. We serve victims of sexual violence as well as domestic violence. We operate four major programs and serve nine counties throughout South Central Minnesota. Annually, CADA serves between 2,000 and 3,000 victims and survivors. Last year, CADA's shelter housed 125 women and 101 children.

While CADA looks different than it did 40 years ago, our goals, values, purpose, and vision for a future without violence remains the same.
Holiday Hope: CADA's Holiday Gift Giving Program

Holiday Hope is CADA’s annual holiday gift giving program. You can help local families have a happy holiday season by purchasing gifts for those in need. Each year, adults and children working with CADA fill out a holiday wish list. Each person’s list is matched with a donor who purchases gifts, helping to make the holidays a little brighter!

Are you interested in granting someone’s holiday wishes? Contact us now!

How does it work? When you contact us, you’ll be asked a few questions about the types of items you would like to shop for and staff will match you with a wish list. Each wish list costs around $50 to fulfill. You can shop for one child or adult, or an entire family!

At CADA, we do our best to provide basic necessities, so we encourage families to put items on their wish lists that are truly wishes - things that will bring them joy! Last year, we were able to provide items for 150 wish lists submitted by 48 different families!

We request that gifts get delivered unwrapped. Delivering your gifts with wrapping supplies or gift bags is always appreciated!

You can also give the gift of time by joining us for one of our gift wrapping days on Wednesday, December 18th from 1:00 - 4:00 or Friday, December 20th from 1:00 - 4:00. Hot chocolate will be provided!

National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
November 16 - 24th is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week in the U.S. This is a week to come together to recognize and draw attention to the issues of hunger and homelessness in this country. Domestic and sexual violence are strongly linked to homelessness, poverty, and food insecurity.
Give to the Max Day
