DSIA Celebrates 10 Years!

Saturday, May 17, 2014 | 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Grand Hall at Clunie Community Center | 601 Alhambra Boulevard, Sacramento, CA 95816

DSIA Celebrates 10 amazing years of serving Sacramento area individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the professionals who serve them.  The evening will include food, dancing, a silent auction, a DSIA book launch and a fantastic guest speaker: Dr. Brian Skotko a renowned board-certified medical geneticist and Co-Director of the Down Syndrome Program at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Our goal is not only to create a fabulous and fun night out to celebrate the DSIA’s 10th anniversary, but also to raise valuable program funds to allow the DSIA to continue to support and empower people with Down syndrome, their families and our entire community!

Since its founding in 2004 by a group of local parents of children with Down syndrome, the DSIA has been dedicated to raising awareness about the tremendous abilities of people with Down syndrome, individuals who are on a great journey of their own. The DSIA also provides education, advocacy and support for families affected by Down syndrome to help them achieve their dreams. One in every 691 babies is born with Down syndrome and locally; approximately 1,000 families include a loved one with Down syndrome.

What is the BIG Day of Giving?

BIG Day of Giving is a 24 hour online giving challenge. Starting at midnight on May 6, 2014, the community will come together to support close to 400 nonprofits from the region. It is an amazing opportunity to raise unrestricted dollars and shine the spotlight on our vibrant nonprofit sector.  The Sacramento region will join hundreds of community foundations across the country on this day through a national campaign called "GiveLocalAmerica". This unprecedented event is a celebration of giving by many donors, and locally, will not just bring additional funding, but increased awareness of the nonprofit sector who work tirelessly to make our community a better place. Giving challenges are sparking excitement in many regions just like ours, and have raised millions.  It's now our turn to do the same!
Giving on May 6 will not only show support for our community and the work of nonprofits, but it will also be an opportunity to make your donation dollars stretch! Many local businesses and organizations have contributed funds to a pool of matching dollars! This means that every dollar donated on May 6 will get a boost from this pool of funds through a pro-rated match.

Researchers in Edinburgh have been undertaking the biggest survey of adults with Down’s Syndrome and sleep disordered breathing to date. Currently, only 2 in every 100 adults with Down’s syndrome are investigated and treated for sleep apnea. However, the researchers in Edinburgh have found that 1 in 3 individuals with this syndrome suffer from moderate to severe sleep apnea which means that up to thirty percent of people are not being offered any treatment or advice for their condition.

New research suggests connection between white matter and cognitive health
Science Codex
A multidisciplinary group of scientists from the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky have identified an interesting connection between the health of the brain tissue that supports cognitive functioning and the presence of dementia in adults with Down syndrome. Published in the Neurobiology of Aging, the study, which focused on detecting changes in the white matter connections of the brain, offers tantalizing potential for the identification of biomarkers connected to the development of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease.
