The Realities of Down Syndrome Research

Dr. Katherine Koenig of the Cleveland Clinic with DownSyndrome Achieves founder, Lito Ramirez, discussing how dementia impacts development of the hippocampus of the brain in people with DS -- a region directly responsible for memory and learning.

Koenig is a neuropsychologist, and member of the Down Syndrome Research Initiative (DSRI). Inspired by her 30-year old sister with DS, she has dedicated her life's work to halting the development and progression of dementia in DS, but lacks many of the tools, capabilities and funding necessary to advance her work from basic research to clinical trial to drug therapies.

Unfortunately, this is a problem that impacts ALL DS researchers. When there is no tools or funding, there can be no progress.

ABOUT THE DOWN SYNDROME RESEARCH INITIATIVE:
The Down Syndrome Research Initiative (DSRI) is a first-of-its-kind collaborative founded in 2010 by DownSyndrome Achieves to address the challenges and barriers that inhibit DS research and to work aggressively to develop solutions that drive innovation and scientific discovery. It is comprised of geneticists, neuroscientists, behavioral and developmental pediatricians, neuropsychologists, and social workers, among others, from nine academic and pediatric institutions, including:

DownSyndrome Achieves and the DSRI are committed to collaborating and partnering with all DS advocacy and research groups, recognizing that each brings unique talents and skills to serve the greater good. We're stronger together than each of us would be on our own.

DownSyndrome Achieves is now on FaceBook and Twitter.  Follow-us for even more DS research news!
