Today we celebrate a great moment in the history of the United States – the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The most famous lines in the Declaration are those that begin the second paragraph.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident . . . .”
Those lines, written by Thomas Jefferson, justified man’s right to be free from the tyrannical laws of a political government. The Declaration and these words were a major step forward in recognizing the right of man to be free. But it remained for Mary Baker Eddy, through her discovery of Christian Science, to recognize that not only did man have the right to be free from the tyrannical laws of a political government, but that he had the divine right, as the child of God, to be free from the tyrannical “laws” of sin, sickness and death. She says in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:
“Like our nation, Christian Science has its Declaration of Independence. God has endowed man with inalienable rights, among which are self-government, reason, and conscience. Man is properly self-governed only when he is guided rightly and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love.” (S&H: p.106)
There are times when one seeking freedom from the oppression of materiality needs the tender care and loving support of a Christian Science nurse – one who has a “demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science practice, who thoroughly understands the practical wisdom necessary in a sick room, and who can take proper care of the sick.” (Mary Baker Eddy, Manual of The Mother Church, p. 49). And this is why High Ridge House is here. It is here to help fulfill Mrs. Eddy’s mission to free all mankind from the erroneous laws of matter. It is here to provide a sanctuary for those seeking to demonstrate the higher law of freedom – the freedom from sin, disease and death.
As members of the Board of Trustees we are grateful that the High Ridge House staff and you are able to play a part in providing this sanctuary for those relying on Christian Science as they demonstrate their Declaration of Independence and find healing. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health:
“Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and cries: ‘Follow me! Escape from the bondage of sickness, sin, and death!’ Jesus marked out the way. Citizens of the world, accept the ‘glorious liberty of the children of God,’ and be free! This is your divine right.” (S&H: p. 227)
With so much love for all of you,
President, Board of Trustees
