Main Street on London-based Journey Skills Podcast
Australian Debra Caldow lives in London with her British husband, Graham, and their two teenage daughters. In 2017, Debra and Graham started the Journey Skills project when they realized they needed a plan for their youngest daughter, Betsy, who has additional needs. In a few years, Betsy would be out of the school system and there seemed to be limited resources for addressing the key areas to foster independent living, namely: work, relationships and daily living skills.
The Journey Skills project includes a website (www.journeyskills.com) with resources for parents on independent living and a podcast that gives a voice to parents and professionals who are pioneers in giving real opportunities for young people with additional needs to live independent lives with pride. Topics range from creating housing, starting businesses that give genuine employment, to programs that help young people develop essential social skills. More than 60 podcast episodes are available through iTunes
. Main Street Founder Jillian Copeland was featured on the podcast on May 13. (LISTEN HERE.
The Journey Skills project is part of a wider vision that Debra and Graham have to use their property investment company to develop integrated co-living projects.
The long-term goal is to bring together amazing individuals and projects to ensure that young people with additional needs have a job, have a place to live and are seen as valued members of their local communities. Many thanks to Debra and Graham for the work they do and for sharing information about Main Street with their podcast listeners.
