Main Street Awarded Low Income Housing Tax Credits 
We got 'em! On August 30, the State of Maryland awarded Main Street low income housing tax credits that will fund a significant portion of the capital costs of the Main Street building. Click here to see Governor Hogan's press release.

August Pool Party and Meet Up 
Main Street Pool Party
Over 50 members came out for the first Main Street pool party on August 14. The group enjoyed good company, pizza and lots of fun in the pool.  
 
August Meet Up in RockvilleOn August 17, Main Street members met up for a Friday Night Live concert at Rockville Town Square. Rain cut the concert short, but it was great to connect and enjoy a few songs together!

Get Your Tickets for Intelligent Lives Film and Panel with the Filmmaker

Join us on Thursday, November 8, for a screening of INTELLIGENT LIVES, the latest film by award-winning filmmaker and disability advocate Dan Habib. INTELLIGENT 
Naieer in Intelligent LivesLIVES stars three pioneering young adults with intellectual disabilities – Micah, Naieer and Naomie – who challenge perceptions of intelligence as they navigate high school, college and the workforce. The film points to a future in which people of all abilities can fully participate in higher education, meaningful employment and intimate relationships.
 
The film will start at 7 PM with a running time of 80 minutes. A panel discussion will follow with:
  • INTELLIGENT LIVES filmmaker Dan Habib
  • Micah Fialka-Feldman – One of the self-advocates featured in INTELLIGENT LIVES
  • Jill Ortman-Fouse – Former Montgomery County Board of Education At-Large member
  • Sara Portman Milner, LCSW-C – Co-founder and Director of Student Services at Sunflower Bakery and Café Sunflower
Cost: $25 per person including the film, panel and light refreshments. Groups of 11 or more receive $5 off per ticket. Contact info@mainstreetconnect.org to request the group rate. Financial aid is also available.

Interested in connecting with other Main Street members to do good? In coordination with the Jubilee Association of Maryland, Main Street is organizing a Community Service Club to give members a chance to engage in community service projects, reflect on past and future opportunities and connect with other members. The club will meet seven times between October 1 and November 12 including in-group sessions for preparation and reflection and service out in the community.

Sunflower Bakery
Sunflower Bakery
Sunflower Bakery is dedicated to preparing young adults with learning differences for employment through professional on-the-job skilled training in pastry, baking, barista work and customer service. Class sessions begin throughout the year in both our Pastry Arts and Café Sunflower Employment Training Programs. Sunflower is an approved Maryland Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) program with proven results:
  • Over 80% of graduates secure employment within 6 months of program graduation
  • 100% of students served gain marketable employment skills
  • Graduates benefit from our growing relationships with area employers and are employed at 38 Metro DC area businesses

6th Annual Autism/IDD Night Out

MCPD Officer Tara BondThe Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) Autism/IDD, Alzheimer’s and Dementia Outreach Unit is hosting the 6th Annual Autism/IDD Night Out. The event will include: 
  • Wandering Safety Kit and other safety resources
  • Meet and greet police officers from each district
  • Tour of county emergency equipment and buses
  • Go Team therapy dogs 
  • Food and fun!

Fall Programs through Ivymount Outreach
Ivymount Outreach shares the expertise of Ivymount School with the greater community offering services by highly trained staff to individuals, families and professionals. Services include recreational, educational and therapeutic programs for children, teens and adults as well as trainings and consultation across a variety of topics in the field of special education. Fall programs are enrolling now and will start in mid-September.
