Expanding our Welcome
JFON West Michigan opens first LGBT Clinic
JFON West Michigan continues to reach out to the most vulnerable immigrants in our communities, holding their first LGBT clinic on August 13 in the  Grand Rapids Pride Center.
We wanted to knock down any barriers that might keep people from seeking help,” explains site attorney Alex Gillett on the decision to forego their usual clinic home at First United Methodist Church of Grand Rapids.
“Our partnership with the Pride Center makes JFON West Michigan that much more welcoming.”

Giving Voice to the Voiceless
Intern interprets so that victims' stories can be heard.
This summer, for the first time,  NJFON was pleased to co-host an intern in partnership with our DC-MD JFON site!
JFON Intern Lucia CrosettiLucia Crosetti, from Kansas City, spent a portion of her time at the National JFON office assisting with projects benefitting our entire network, such as creating guidelines for interpreters, researching unmet immigrant needs at prospective JFON sites, and compiling a bank of client stories.
Meanwhile, Lucia also worked directly with DC-MD JFON attorney Angela Edman, interpreting for Spanish-speaking clients and engaging in a wide range of casework.

Action Alert : Refugee Summit
For the first time in its history, the UN General Assembly has called for a high-level (Heads of State) Refugee Summit on Monday, September 19, 2016 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
On the following day, Tuesday, September 20, President Barack Obama will host a Leaders’ Summit on the Global Refugee Crisis.
This is a watershed moment. We hope and pray that the leaders of the world can work together to create a humane and predictable system for responding to large movements of refugees and migrants.
However, we are also called upon to do our own part to help. If you are looking for ways to get involved and become an effective advocate for refugees and migrants, our colleagues at Refugee Council USA have some excellent ideas for you.
Please also electronically sign our postcard urging the U.S. to increase refugee resettlement and funding.
