Music as a Means of Maintaining Skills
Music and Movement plays a big part in our SMILE day program

Music is one of the few activities that involve using the whole brain. Not only can music make us feel better; it improves memory, focus and attention. It can also help physical coordination and helps maintain range of motion.

Music and movement is a big part of daily activities at Community Connections' SMILE program, for adults with intellectual disabilities. Whether we make our own music, catch up with the classics such as Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, or dance to 'Twist & Shout' from The Beatles, we always share a smile and laugh.
Math Olympics at The Community House
A Fun Way to Improve Math Skills
Article Image
Our Children & Youth Services program, in a collaboration with CT After School Network, recently held a Winter Olympics-themed event, but with a twist.

There were approximately 50 participants, including students from our before and after school care and their families, who took part in “Math Olympics”; incorporating math skills with fun games and activities that are based on the winter Olympic events.

The students worked on math skills including fractions, money, measurements and more while playing winter Olympic-themed games such as Hockey, Figure Skating, Curling and Biathlon.

We are grateful to announce that the Community House received a grant from the three Connecticut subsidiaries of AVANGRID, Inc.; United Illuminating, Southern Connecticut Gas and Connecticut Natural Gas. Grants were issued to 56 nonprofit organizations under Connecticut’s Neighborhood Assistance Act (NAA) tax credit program.

Since 2010, the Connecticut AVANGRID companies have awarded more than $2.9 million in grants through the state’s Neighborhood Assistance Act (NAA) Tax Credit Program, which provides a corporate tax credit to encourage businesses to provide financial support to qualified local nonprofit organizations. These funds will be put to good use on much-needed energy efficiency projects at the Community House.

Click here for more about NAA and if you wish to participate in the NAA Tax Credit Program, please consider making your NAA contribution to the Community House.
