UNH Fellow in 'The House'
UNH students gain experience working with children
The Community House partners with University of New Haven's President's Public Service Fellowship Program. The program places highly qualified students in a non-profit or public service work environment for eleven weeks during the summer months.

This year, we welcome Kelly Dowd who is in her Junior year at UNH studying Criminal Justice. She will work along-side our teachers in our Children & Youth Services program providing child care for elementary school children before and after school and during the summer.

Over the last 18 years of our partnership with UNH, many students have continued working with us during and after their college years. A couple of students actually changed their field of study and have gone on to graduate work in education due to their experience working in our program.
Working Side-By-Side Intergenerationally
Preschoolers enjoyed their visit from SMILE clients
SMILE and HSA few clients from our SMILE program (a program for adults with developmental disabilities) along with students from one of our Head Start classrooms planted flowers and spices together.

The children learned about how plants grow, when and how much to water them as well as about the different aspects of the plants like how some are spikey and some are smooth, how some smelled sweet and others had a strong odor.

With the help of SMILE program clients, the children made potted flowers and put together bags of seeds/food that they were able to take home. Both groups enjoyed the activity, and we are hoping to do it more often.
