VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
KEYNA MASON´╗┐
keyna
Volunteers are like nurses; both are drawn to their work by a desire to care, serve, and help. Keyna has a double amount of those qualities because she is both a WHAM volunteer, and now, also a nurse! She has been at WHAM since August 2017 as part of a work-study program at Chamberlain College of Nursing. During that time, Keyna has served WHAM clients compassionately and has worked tirelessly in multiple departments and in various capacities, always eager to help where needed. Keyna's outgoing personality and friendly, vivacious spirit has made her recognized, valued, and loved throughout the ministry. An accomplished nursing student, she was a scholarship recipient, highest achievement award winner, voted most likely to become a faculty member, and December honors graduate. Keyna is excited to begin her new career, and she will still make time to volunteer at WHAM in an area that is especially dear to her heart: showers and haircuts for the homeless. We are proud of Keyna's accomplishments and her commitment to helping others, and we are blessed to have her as part of our volunteer family.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
THE REV. MARK BROWN

Mark and Christi Brown
Mark and Christi BrownOver the past year, WHAM has accomplished so much, and we are grateful for the resources that have allowed us to help over 47,000 people in crisis. Although that number is large, we know there are still many in our community who are struggling and desperately need our assistance. Our heart at WHAM is to help in whatever way we can, whether that is feeding the hungry, providing financial assistance with rent or utilities to families trying to keep a roof over their heads, or offering job training and education to those striving for self-sufficiency. But more than that, we want to give hope to those we serve, not just at Christmas, but throughout the year. Why not start 2019 with a resolution to make a difference by joining us in our work at WHAM? We invite you to become part of the WHAM community of caring by volunteering, donating items to our resale store, or contributing financially. God bless you, and may you have a wonderful and blessed Christmas!
GRACE: A STORY OF ANSWERED PRAYER
KEEPING OUR CLIENTS WARM

graceGrace found her prayers were answered when she came to WHAM desperate for assistance with her gas bill. Like many senior citizens, Grace is on a fixed income with no additional source of earnings, and she struggles to cover her living expenses each month. She was facing immediate disconnection of utility services and was worried about surviving the cold weather without heat. Fortunately, Grace found the help she needed at WHAM to pay her gas bill and avoid loss of service, alleviating her concern about staying safe and warm. While at the ministry, she was also able to shop for food in WHAM’s food pantry, allowing her to stock up on healthy items to last until her next check. Grace says her prayers to God for help directed her to WHAM, and she will gratefully utilize our services again in the future.
WHAM PARTNERS WITH HEROES AND HELPERS
CHRISTMAS SHOPPING WITH NEW FRIENDS

heroes and helpers
The aisles in Target were filled with smiles and fun times on December 12 as kids and police officers, with shopping lists in hand, worked together to fill their carts with gifts for loved ones. For the second year, the Heroes and Helpers holiday shopping event was a huge success thanks to a partnership with WHAM, Westchase District, Westchase District Patrol Officers, and the Target store at 10801 Westheimer. Forty kids from the Westchase neighborhood received a $150 Target gift card, courtesy of Target, and were then paired with an officer who helped them make their selections and go through the checkout line. The event encourages positive relationships between local police officers and children, and it is easy to see that long after the gifts have been opened, the memories of this time spent shopping with their new friends will be remembered for many years to come.group heroes and helpers

HOLIDAY MEALS AND TOYS
MAKING THE HOLIDAYS SPECIAL
holiday foodholiday foodholiday food
The additional costs of the holiday season are especially difficult for families facing hardships, and many are not able to afford traditional family gatherings or gifts for their children. Each year, WHAM provides a Thanksgiving or Christmas meal to families who are struggling financially so they can enjoy a special holiday dinner with loved ones. Each household is given all the ingredients for a delicious meal, including a gift card for purchasing meat or another main course, stuffing, potatoes, vegetables, gravy, and pie. New this year, homeless clients received restaurant gift cards, so they could go out for a holiday meal. For Thanksgiving and Christmas, WHAM put food on the holiday table or provided restaurant meals for over 450 families and homeless individuals through our holiday meal distribution. Wham also partnered with the Houston Food Bank for the Share Your Holidays event which gave out holiday food boxes at WHAM on two days to people in need from across the city.

In addition to holiday meals, WHAM also distributes toys to younger children and gift cards to older children to make their holidays memorable. Parents are able to "shop" for toys for children up to age 9 and can choose from a wide selection of age-appropriate toys. Older kids receive gift cards, allowing them to pick out their own gifts, according to their interests. WHAM's holiday programs are possible because of the generous support of the community through monetary contributions, toy and gift card donations, and toy drives.

During the past year, WHAM has assisted over 47,000 people! With the support and generosity of donors like yourself, we have provided food, financial assistance for rent and utilities, and employment resources, education, and training to families and homeless individuals in need. We look forward to continuing our work in 2019, and we thank you for helping us make a difference in the lives of so many.
