A Message from Encore's Board President
David Bernstein Announces Mary Spencer Departure
To the Encore Community:
It is with sadness that I must announce that Encore’s Executive Director, Mary Spencer, has resigned.
Mary has had a profound and lasting positive impact on Encore, directing many important changes and improvements in Encore’s business processes and operations, fund raising, and engagement with our singers and supporters. She became a friend to many with her warm smile and winning personality. She displayed a great deal of skill & experience to Encore’s benefit. She also shared in the pride, enjoyment and sense of accomplishment, seeing Encore's extraordinary growth since her arrival. Mary added immeasurably to Encore's success through her hard work, long hours, knowledge, skill and experience.
On behalf of Encore’s Board of Directors and staff, we wish her success in finding the place to again display her considerable talents.
While we strive to find an equally talented replacement for Mary, Encore’s Founder and Artistic Director, Jeanne Kelly will do “double duty.” Please address any inquiries to her at Jeanne.firstname.lastname@example.org. The office phone number is 301-261-5747.
A Message from Mary Spencer
Farewell to All My Friends at Encore
Dear Encore Singers,
As my time with Encore comes to an end, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to you for a wonderful spring concert season and a fabulous summer, as many Encore singers travel to Canada for an exciting concert tour or attend one or more of our fun and challenging Summer Institutes.
Since my first day with Encore, I have never stopped being delighted and amazed by the talent of our singers. Getting to know you and seeing you shine during rehearsals and concerts has brought me tremendous joy. You are all an inspiration and your friendship and support has meant the world to me. I have worked hard over these past 2 1/2 years on behalf of Encore to ensure that the organization has been able to grow and remain strong and sustainable into the future. I am very proud of all that I have been able to accomplish in partnership with our dedicated staff.
I wish Encore great success as it continues to offer this life-changing experience to an increasing number of talented singers.
All my best,
Annual Jeanne Kelly Fund Appeal is on its Way
Last year, as part of Encore's Tenth Anniversary celebration, Encore's Board of Directors established the Jeanne Kelly Founder's Fund to recognize the hard work and dedication Jeanne has committed to Encore for over ten years. The fund was established to support Encore's artistic and organizational growth.
Thanks to the generosity of Encore's donors, contributions to the Jeanne Kelly Fund were used to provide added training to Encore's conductors, including vital first aid and CPR training. The Fund also supported Encore's expansion into New York City, as well as laying the groundwork for expansion into other cities across the country.
You will soon receive a letter from Encore's Board President, David Bernstein, asking for your support again this year. Encore counts on your generosity in helping us to reach even higher levels of professionalism and to offer the joy of singing to even more plus-55 singers.
Mark Your Calendars
Our singers are ready for a busy month of May! As always, we have a jam packed schedule of concerts. Both the Chorale and ROCKS repertoires are especially good this year, so you won't want to miss out. The complete schedule is below. Mark your calendar now!

Watch for Encore's New Web Site
Every now and then, it's time for a new look. For Encore's web site, that time is now. We're putting the finishing touches on a completely overhauled web site. Among several new features will be a "Singers Only" section, password accessible. This will provide singers with a single online location for concert information, flyers, repertoire, music downloads and much more. Watch for it to debut around mid-month May.
Not too many people will admit to becoming passionate about a random flyer or in some cases, a piece of junk mail. In my case, this is exactly what happened.
I am Fran Kaufman and I sing with the Columbia Chorale under the tutelage of Stephen Harouff. As luck would have it, I moved to Columbia exactly when the Columbia Chorale was just forming. I live in a senior building and of course we receive lots of miscellaneous "stuff." One such piece of paper was a notice of the formation of the Encore Chorale in Columbia. I double checked to see if my personal name was on it. Around the same time, one of my darling daughters said to me, "Mom, the way I see it, you have another really good 20+ years ahead of you. What do you want to do with your time?" I was a widow who had moved to a state with no friends, no activities, no nothing other than the big one! My two daughters, two sons-in-law and 3 fabulous granddaughters (I am too biased,)
I said to #2 daughter, I want to sing. She laughed aloud and said, "Mom, you can't sing!" I replied, "WATCH ME!"
And so my passion for all things Encore Chorale began. I've been rather fortunate in my life to have had some experiences that have effected great change for and in me. My passions have not been in all that I have done but in many cases, I have made a difference in others' lives. I've been an elementary teacher, I've owned my own travel agency and traveled extensively, I've been an elected official twice in Broward County, FL, I was a zoo docent for 8 years in Memphis, TN and I have volunteered in hospital ERs in three states.
And now, I have the honor of being a singer with Encore Chorale. We bring much joy to those that come to our concerts. In the last three years I have attended three camps and will be traveling to Canada this month. I also plan on going back to Chautauqua in August.
How can I describe the feeling I get not only when we all sing together but, how this experience constantly feeds my soul and my being. It's as if it were lyrical in the sense that all aspects of Encore fit together in harmony. Encore provides the palette for all things musical, friendships, lots of laughter, improving my health and companionship.
I believe I will have far more than 20+ years to go especially with Encore Chorale in my life.
Join us for a wonderful week of song with singers from around the country!
New this year - International Vocal Ensembles Join Encore Singers for a Special Day of Workshops and Performances!
Campers stay on-site at beautiful venues while they rehearse, work on vocal technique and sight reading, and then conclude the week with a performance on stage for family, friends and the community.
