Encore ROCKS is Coming to Columbia, MD

Article Image If you haven't done so already, Encore needs you to register for the Fall Semester as soon as possible. Here's why: It takes several weeks to order and receive sheet music and rehearsal CDs. We do our best to estimate how many sets we need, but don't want to over-order and incur unnecessary costs. This means last-minute registrants risk not having their materials until the second - or even third - week of the semester.  Also, some of our locations have reached, or are close to, capacity. Late registrants may find a program sold out.  So do yourself (and Encore) a favor and register today.

Registration for all programs is now open on Encore's web site. Click HERE,  Spread the word to your friends!, especially those in the Columbia area, where Stephen Harouff will be conduction the new Columbia ROCKS.

Come with Us to London!
And Get There Aboard the Queen Mary 2

Article Image
Encore asked the Canada travelers: "Where to next?" The #1 response: London.  So that's where we're going in May 2019.

And to make things even more interesting, travelers will have the option to get there by Crossing the Pond aboard the luxurious Queen Mary 2, where singers will rehearse daily and perform a final concert in the iconic Queen's Room for afternoon high tea.

Once in London, either via air or ship, we'll be in the capable hands of Classical Movements (Canada Lessons Learned in place) for a week of sightseeing and concertizing in some high profile venues.

Details are still in the planning stages, but it certainly promises to be a memorable journey.  For more details - still tentative, of course - see the trip overview on Encore's web site HERE.

In order to plan properly and negotiate best prices, we need to know if you plan to participate. Please respond by August 31st, indicating your participation and mode of travel (air round trip or QM2 - air return), with a refundable $500 deposit.  Estimated cost of the London segment of the trip, including round trip air fare is about $4,000 per person, double occupancy.  Passage on the QM2 ranges from about $1,500 to $5,000, depending on your level of luxury. Click HERE to sign up and pay your deposit.

Thanks for Your Input!
Great Response to Spring 2018 Program Evaluation Survey
Over a thitd of all Encore singers took the time to respond to the Spring Semester Program Evaluation Survey, an excellent rate of return.  And a full 98% were "Very Satisfied" (*83%) or "Satisfied" (15%) with their Overall Chorale Experience. Apparently, Encore is doing some things right!

Singers provided a wealth of positive comments as well as many ideas on how Encore could be even better.  Encore staff members have reviewed them all and have already begun to make changes where practical.  More improvements will be forthcoming.

Encore has compiled a full report, detailing all comments received and a high level response to those comments.  You may download and read the report at Encore's web site HERE.  (password: singers)

Encore Singer Profile
Bernie Remington

Bernie Remington has sung in Towson Chorale for four years and Towson Rocks for one year.  She has been to many camps, Homestead Getaway Weekend, and recently was part of the Canada tour with Classical Movements.

How did you discover Encore?  By chance I read a memoir called Imperfect Harmony about a woman who found much fulfillment singing with a chorus in New York City.  I had never really sung but it sounded like fun.  So I googled “un-auditioned choruses,” and Encore’s site came up with a picture of Jeanne Kelly.  I called assuming I would reach a big office and clerical staff.  To my shock Jeanne answered the phone.  My first response was “I’m looking at your picture, and you are a beautiful woman!”   And so it began.

What do you love most about singing with Encore?  I love the challenge of learning my alto part of our lovely repertoire.  The CD for each session and camp becomes my close friend.  We are joined at the hip – and I sing along wherever I might be.  An added gift has been forming friendships with so many new people in my life.

What does your family think of your participation in Encore?  My family is delighted that I’ve found something which brings me such pleasure.  They are a great gang of groupies, and show up wherever we sing as often as they can.

Has Encore made a difference in your life?  In what way?  Sometimes I feel that Encore has been my lifeline as well as source of much pleasure.  In recent years my son has been very ill with a malignant brain tumor.  The singing has carried me through much of the fear and pain.  The focus required to sing seems to absorb my mind and transport me away even if only briefly.  Finally we lost him while I was on the Canada tour.  Not many places one is surrounded by 150 caring people with open arms and ready hugs.  I plan to continue to sing and hope it will carry me through the grief as it did the years of his illness.

Do you have a favorite piece that you have performed with Encore?  My favorite piece we’ve ever sung was Les Miserables.  A wonderful piece of work and a joy for me every time we sang it.  Performing it in DAR Constitution Hall was a signature moment in my life.

If you had a wish for Encore’s future what would it be?  I would wish that Encore will grow and continue to provide the joy I have found there for older adults far into the future.
