Meet the Conductors
Jeff Dokken, Encore ROCKS Director

Article ImageHi Friends,
I hope you are enjoying this holiday season. Thank you for all of your hard work during the fall session, and I can not wait for our upcoming concerts.

Most of you know me professionally, so I'll just share a very brief version of my bio here.  In addition to being the Director of Encore Rocks and an Encore Conductor, I am also the Music Director and Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia, Music Director and Conductor of the Rome Symphony Orchestra (GA), and Artistic Director of CoroAllegro (DE).  I frequently guest conduct orchestras and choirs around the world (this year Italy, Ecuador, and Iceland), and I spend a fair amount of time in recording studios working on opera and classical recordings.

Many of you might know less about me personally, however. I am from Southern California, and I try to always remember my roots. I grew up part of the year at the beach and part of the year in the desert. Hence two of my great loves, being in the water, and playing golf. If I've got a snorkel in my mouth or a surf board under my feet I'm a happy camper. And, I actually found out that Jeanne was hiring me to be an Encore conductor while on a golf course! I learned music using the Orff Approach, and once wrote a term paper about handbell choirs.

My favorite aspect of music is getting to share my love and passion for music with others, which is part of what I enjoy most about working with Encore. All of you have such an appetite for knowledge, and are constantly striving to be better. I am so delighted and honored to share what I know and love with all of you each week.

Encore has been a constant in my life for the past 6 years. I love the music, my colleagues, the opportunities we have, but most of all, I love you guys.  You are what keeps me coming back session after session, year after year. As much as I have been able to give to you, I promise you have given me twice as much in return.

How did I start singing with Encore? Since my mother informed me that I had been singing popular songs since age 3 I have been strongly attracted to various opportunities to do just that.

About nine years ago, after performing in a talent show at an old movie theater in Bethesda, I encountered Jeanne Kelly (no relation except sharing a love of music) recruiting older adults to join her very new Encore Chorale. Membership requirements include, 1) being 55 years or older and 2) just show up. It was an offer I could not refuse. At the time I was recently widowed and looking for opportunites to actively deal with my lonliness.

What do I get out of singing with Encore programs?  First, I'd have to say that singing makes me feel good - I guess it's releasing those endorphins into the blood stream. But, equally important is the camaraderie of being with a group of people who share a common love of singing. Finally, everyone in the organization, Jeanne, Jeff and the staff, makes me feel so welcome. Along the way Jeanne additionally boosted my enthusiasm by bending her "rule" (we are a chorus not soloists) by asking me to perform "Danny Boy" at a rehearsal around St. Patrick's Day. It has now become a tradition.

What is it about rehearsal that keeps me coming week after week?  Jeanne, with her consummate professionalism and unbounded enthusiasm, provides me with a rich musical resource. She keeps the selection of choral pieces interesting and challenging each season. I was instantly hooked and have remained so to this day.
At my advanced age, I thank the Lord every day that I can still handle this musical repertoire. As an added bonus, I share Glen Echo membership with my special friend Dawn Badrick and I have met many fellow singers each with their own musical motivations. There's no greater joy than making beautiful music together!
