Board & Staff Update
The Board of Directors held their Annual Meeting earlier this month where they welcomed new board members, Mariam Afzal and Kinan Alhoch. The Board also elected a new President, Co-Founder Safaa Ibrahim and new Vice President, Agnes Chong. We wanted to thank outgoing President, Co-Founder Ayman Elsawah for his leadership over the last three years as he transitions to a general board member. Congratulations!
Muhi Khwaja will be focusing time as Director of Development & Philanthropy. As a Co-Founder, Muhi has helped recruit board members and carry out the mission and vision traveling across the country to represent AMF. As Director of Development & Philanthropy he will focus on fundraising, building relationships with families and nonprofits, and help showcase the impact Muslim philanthropy has through Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) and endowments.
Getting Ready for Ramadan
With Ramadan around the corner, we hope you're considering the best ways to support all of the nonprofit organizations you love. To increase your effectiveness and have the opportunity to streamline your giving, consider opening a DAF.
A DAF will allow you to consolidate your donations, receive one tax receipt for multiple gifts to your favorite charities, have the ability to invest your balance, and make distributions on your own timetable all while getting a deduction once you setup your account along with the convenience of a philanthropic advisor to help you research zakat eligible nonprofits and great organizations making an impact.

In partnership with AMANA Mutual Funds, we will be hosting a pre-Ramadan webinar to showcase how families can take advantage of giving through their IRAs, appreciated assets, and focus on best practices for charitable giving. Please save the date for Tuesday April 30 at 11am Pacific. To sign up or learn more, visit our Events page.
If your favorite organizations are not listed on our website under eligible organizations, make sure they fill out our agreement form at: These charities have received more than $750,000 since 2017. AMF vets charities for the families we work with to make sure the causes you care about are in compliance with the IRS and are following best practices.

Abir Alhumdi & Jawad Khan

Having lived in Michigan, Texas, and now California, we have always been interested in being near our families or a strong Muslim community. Our parents showed us the importance of being there for others and what living in proximity to a mosque meant outside of work and life and it's something that we now want for our kids. In Arabic, our names Abir and Jawad respectively mean fragrant and generous. And we hope that through our actions, we can bring beauty, excellence, and grace to what our religion asks us to do.
In studying medicine and becoming a hand surgeon, I was looking for ways to give back to people who were less fortunate and found myself going on medical trips through one of our favorite charities, Palestine Children's Relief Fund. It was on these trips that I recognized my duty to help others with my skills. This is also why we feel passionate about supporting causes that other people are championing. Although we may not have the time to continue to always volunteer in meaningful ways, we feel that our charitable giving can have the same impact.
When we partner with AMF, and countless other nonprofits, we value the work they are doing to uplift the Muslim community and build institutions our kids and future generations will also benefit from. As we have seen our parents be generous and open-handed with others, we now have the opportunity to do the same.
