Understanding & Acceptance
Autism Awareness Month
In an effort to increase understanding and acceptance for our friends, family members, neighbors, and coworkers who live with autism, each April is designated Autism Awareness Month. Monday, April 2nd was World Autism Awareness Day 2018 and many chose to “Light it up Blue” to honor that day. According to the National Autism Association, autism now affects 1 in 68 children. Boys are four times more likely to have autism than girls.
What is Autism? Autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that generally appears before the age of 3. Autism impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction, communication skills, and cognitive function. Individuals with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. Autism is diagnosed four times more often in boys than girls.

Community Partners
We can’t do what we do alone. We are so grateful for partners in the community who help us fulfill our mission. We are especially thankful for the support from the Grundy County Community Foundation for their support of our thrift store operations in Grundy Center. We’d also like to express our gratitude to the Butler County Community Foundation for their support of our Employment Support Services.
Through our Employment Support Services, we have the great pleasure to connect with local businesses as well. Most recently we partnered with Paws Amore in Waverly and Feldmeier Equipment in Shell Rock for work readiness and job shadows. Together, we are breaking down barriers for employment for people with disabilities.
Finally, we have been thrilled to partner with the Lied Center by providing work experience to students at our Waverly Trinkets & Togs. Students are gaining work experience by working at the store processing donations and helping to maintain the sales floor.

Shelby's Story:
Shelby grew up on a farm in Western Butler County with his family and now lives  in Waverly. With the support of The Larrabee Center services, Shelby feels he has become more independent. Shelby gained work experience at Trinkets & Togs Thrift Store in Waverly where he added data entry, retail and customer service skills to his resume while also gaining confidence and friends in the workplace. Shelby now has a part-time job at Wartburg College Dining Services where he works to maintain the main dining room. He enjoys the work he does there but  especially likes the nice people and positive environment. Shelby appreciates the support he has received to live in his own home and in the community. From  learning to maintain his own apartment and cooking meals to taking care of     himself and learning to cope with difficult situations, Shelby feels The Larrabee Center has really made a difference in his life. He feels he has learned how to   socialize and make friends, too. We are honored to support Shelby in becoming a valued member of his community.
