Enriching Lives through Employment
A Story about a First Job
How many of us remember our first job? The pride in earning that first paycheck? The value of being part of a team? Having a job is so much more than a paycheck. It gives us purpose. It makes us part of a community. It even helps define who we are. For people with disabilities, overcoming personal and community barriers make it difficult to obtain and maintain employment. Recently, we began working with a young man who had spent the last decade in and out of vocational programs and sheltered workshops. While he had gained some on-the-job experience, he had not been able to translate that into a job in the community. And being that he didn’t have any work experience to speak of, filling out applications was difficult. Through a work readiness assessment, he was able to connect with an employer who later served as a professional reference. With the support of a job coach, he was able to build his resume, complete an application for a seasonal position with the City of Waverly. When he was invited for an interview, his job coach helped him prepare and ultimately accompanied him to the interview where he was offered the job on the spot. He got his first job! He started out working in the cemetery and later moved to the parks department. As the summer comes to an end, he is finishing up his seasonal work and will begin looking for his next job with the support of his job coach. Working this summer at his first job has given him so much more than a paycheck and has also had an impact on the community. When we can live and work together, our lives and our community is truly enriched.

We can’t do what we do alone.
We are so grateful for partners in the community who help us fulfill our mission. We are honored by the continued support of the Bremer County Community Foundation and Waverly Community Fund. Funds received will be used toward the purchase of a van for our Community Support Services, assisting clients to access the community.
In May, we partnered with CUNA Mutual in Waverly for our annual clothing drive. The generosity of their employees in support of our thrift store and employment services is greatly appreciated.
