Hello all of you fabulous Encore singers,

Five hundred and fifty Encore Chorale and ROCKS singers performed a spectacular holiday concert on December 26th in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. We estimate there were 2,100 in the audience wildly cheering us on. It was indeed a huge success for Encore. The Kennedy Center presents three huge free concerts over the holiday. They are Tuba Christmas, Messiah Sing-Along and drum roll please.......Encore!

We are all very lucky to receive this invitation and the Kennedy Center was so delighted with our performance that they have invited us to perform a concert on December 26, 2019! They love Encore and the excellence and professionalism we bring to the Kennedy Center.

I woke up the morning of our Kennedy Center concert and knew exactly what coffee mug I would use for my morning coffee. It says "Do Your Best." I thought about that all day. And when I was choosing jewelry for my dress, I knew I had to wear a necklace my mother had worn. She would be so darn proud of Encore. With incredible teamwork and diligent preparation, we pulled off the best concert Jeff, Stephen and I could have hoped for. Thank you to you all!

Happy New Year and I hope you enjoy rehearsing the spring repertoire.

SING ON!
Jeanne

Rehearsal Make-up and Visiting Policy

As a benefit of your membership in Encore, you may attend as many Chorale or ROCKS (depending on which program you are registered for) rehearsals at other locations as you wish. However, due to the fact that certain programs and registrations are under the control of our partnering organizations, you may not attend rehearsals if you are not registered there. Specifically, you may not attend rehearsals at Anne Arundel Community College Encore Chorale, Glen Echo Encore Chorale, Glen Echo ROCKS, or Goodwin House Encore Chorale if you are not registered at that location. This also applies to any rehearsals you would like to make up for those you might have missed at your primary location.

One of my earliest memories is from when I was about five years old. I liked to walk around the house ‘conducting’ to my favorite symphony, Tchaikovsky’s 5th. In those days I dreamed of becoming an orchestra conductor. About five years after that I discovered choral singing and some years later realized that choral conducting was my true calling.

Choral singing, which I continue to do to this day, feeds my soul in a way that nothing else can so I have spent the last thirty-five or so years of my life sharing my love of choral singing with others. I taught secondary music in a public school system for twenty years, but it wasn’t until I started working with adults that I really found the joy of choral conducting.

Nowadays, since my piano skills are not adequate for the level of music my choruses sing, I am very fortunate to be able to work with my husband, Nick, who is a great accompanist. I’ve heard many (most!) people say they could never work with their spouse, but that is not the case for us. We love it! Fun fact: Nick and I met when we were both singing in The Frederick Chorale. I was still teaching then and he was a software engineer by day and accompanist by night. Eventually we got married, he became the accompanist for the group, and I the soprano section leader. We will celebrate our 20th anniversary this coming fall. Together we bring lots of fun and heart to each rehearsal, always striving to guide our groups to a high level of musical achievement. This is our fourth year with Encore. It has been a great opportunity for us to work together and for me to share my passion for excellent choral singing. Sing on!!

Encore Singer Profile
Billie Homberg
Quinn
Billie is currently a member of Encore Chorale of Frederick and also serves as the Chorale Master

How did I start singing with Encore? I became very interested in joining the Encore Chorale of Frederick after attending their 2015 Holiday concert. Even more so when I found out I did not have to audition. My singing background has been strictly amateur. School and church choirs and ending in 1980 after 12 years singing Lead in the Montgomery County Chapter of Sweet Adelines. Other than singing in the shower from 1980 to 2016, you can imagine my relief not having to audition!!

What do I get out of singing with Encore programs?
Being a member of Encore since Spring 2016 has opened up my mind to learn to sing songs in a foreign language, and wishing I had paid more attention to the foreign language classes I had in school. I am blown away with the musical knowledge and the singing talent our members have. I have learned to pronounce correctly many of the complicated words in a song just by listening to the talented singers around me.

I volunteered for the Chorale Master position at the beginning of the Fall 2016 semester because I hoped my administrative talent would make up for my limited singing talent.
