Our Mission

Encore is dedicated to providing an excellent and accessible artistic environment for older adults, 55 and over, regardless of experience or ability, who seek arts education and performance opportunities under a professional artist. Encore is an IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit tax-exempt organization.

All Encore programs are conducted by professional artists who will know how to get the most from their members. So come join the excitement, either as a beginner or at an advanced level. This is an excellent way to learn how to develop or improve your musical abilities, meet new friends, and look forward to an exciting performance schedule.

You’re never too old to try something new—and have the time of your life!

Happy February to all!

Despite Mother Nature’s attempts to wreak havoc on the start of Encore’s Winter/Spring semester, it is clear to me that nothing can keep Encore’s spirit and joyful singing down! Your enthusiasm and resilience are remarkable and a testament to the power of the Encore community.

As you are enjoying your weekly rehearsals, I am happy to share some news from Encore’s headquarters. We are excited to announce that we will be relocating our office in Churchton to our new home in Annapolis on March 1, 2019. As of that date, our new address will be 147 Old Solomons Island Road, Suite 211, Annapolis, MD 21401. Our office is in the Annapolis Professional Center II building, which is located just behind Annapolis Subaru.

Our new, more centralized and accessible location represents the next step in our growth and development and allows us to more fully participate in the vibrant arts community in the region. Just last week Jeanne Kelly and I attended Maryland Arts Day at Saint John’s College, where representatives from arts organizations throughout the state gathered to advocate to legislators at the state capitol the importance and value of the arts. You can trust that all of us at Encore help educate and champion the impact of creativity in aging and the importance of arts education in all stages of life, not just for youth. Our advocacy efforts extend beyond Maryland to every state Encore serves as well as at the federal level.

We take great pride in Encore’s mission, and at the very core of that mission is you, our singers, and the collective and supportive community you create.

Onward and upward!

Joan and Ted sing with
the Fairfax Encore Chorale

How did we start singing with Encore?

JOAN: We joined Encore when we saw it advertised in Smithsonian magazine. Jeanne was always inspiring, energetic and friendly. We realized we could sing with a group nearer to Reston, we were delighted. The choice of music was and still is particularly challenging to me, a person who has always enjoyed singing in church choirs, school ensembles and local community groups, but I never had any training beyond the theory basics in 3 years of piano lessons.

TED: Joan and I got started with the Smithsonian Chorale, with Jeanne, a few years ago in the Fall semester. At that time, we didn't know about the Potomac chapter. Twenty minutes from home was very favorable over the trek and parking for the Smithsonian; so we switched!

What do we get out of singing with Encore programs?

JOAN: The Encore members were and are friendly and we enjoy their company!

The challenge of "using my brain" in retirement was exciting! The various venues for concerts continue to be exciting; I'm learning to adjust to different acoustics.

TED: Being a trained classical musician means I love to perform, and I have always enjoyed singing. Jeanne has outstanding directors for Encore, and it's a fun group with whom to work and sing. I'm a French horn player, and Jeanne has often asked me to play a solo or be included in a Chorale piece, so I get the best of both worlds.

What do we get out of rehearsing with Encore programs?

JOAN: Being part of a congenial and talented group makes me look forward to each rehearsal and appreciate the hard work a conductor must do dealing with the varying degrees of ability; being able to read music is not a requirement; CDs of the music are helpful letting us practice between rehearsals. The musical knowledge I have gained is amazing. Ted being a professional musician will have different items. (Poor Ted with perfect pitch is very....patient!

TED: Rehearsals are always meaningful, with emphasis on proper singing, pronunciation, and making music! Concerts are very pleasurable when everything comes together! Encore is a great hobby for me, having been a professional horn player for many years! I love it!
