Dear Colleagues,

I hope this note finds you well. Our Leadership Houston Signature Program has kicked off with Class XXXVII recently attending “This Is Houston” Day. It’s great to see class members learn about our city while developing friendships that will last for years to come. In the meantime, many of you are out there making a difference, as we see from posts on the Facebook alumni page and this newsletter’s spotlight on Megan Ortiz, Class XXXV. Keep up the great work – this is what leadership is all about! And be sure to let us know about it! We love to hear about all of the amazing things our alumni are doing around Houston.

I encourage you to read this newsletter and learn about the great things happening at Leadership Houston, including alumni programs and how you can stay connected. Click on social media links, stay updated and please let us know what you are up to. We look forward to hearing from you.

Are you a Houston native or a transplant?
I am a 5th generation Houstonian (that I have been able to trace back thus far). My great great grandparent's home is one of the few still standing in Sawyer Heights and my grandparents met in 1943 at what is now Fitzgeralds.
What made you decide to apply to Leadership Houston?
I always admired the leadership programs in the metros I lived in so when I moved back to Houston I immediately considered applying to Leadership Houston, assuming a residency requirement would be in place. I literally applied around 5 pm on the last day of the last round for Class 35. Allison Esenkova, Class XXXI, encouraged me to throw my name in the ring.
Finish this sentence, "As a result of my experience in Leadership Houston I..."
I have been able to gain a greater understanding of how Houston functions. And, of course, I've gained the most amazing friends.
What is your best memory of your time with Leadership Houston?
Family 6, LH Class XXXV had a pretty epic road rally. For all being leaders, none of us came prepared with directions on how to complete the assignment. We had the best time figuring it out as we went along and celebrated a job well done over margaritas at The Original Ninfa's on Navigation.
What is one fun fact about you that few people know?
I'm a proud first-generation college graduate and I'm currently training to obtain my private pilot license.
Finish this sentence, "Leadership Houston is...."
...a beautiful reflection of Houston's collaborative culture.
What are you doing now in your career/civic life?
I work for a wonderful oil & gas company - Covia - that allows me to be a mom first in parallel with my role as marketing lead for our energy segment. Additionally, Covia is incredibly charitable both with the financial support of local organizations but also, they actively encourage employees to give back through community service. In 2016, I founded Big Give Houston - Houston's first community-wide fundraiser - and I am in the midst of organizing our 2018 24-hour day of giving, which will take place on Giving Tuesday. I cannot thank my company enough for allowing me to prioritize family and my commitment to my community.
