Living Longer & Better With Lupus

Dr. Donald Thomas, Jr. was the Keynote Presenter at our annual Lupus Education Conference in St. Louis on September 28, 2019.

Dr. Thomas is the author of the highly acclaimed patient education book "The Lupus Encyclopedia: a comprehensive guide for patients and families". He is past chair of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council of the Lupus Foundation of America Midatlantic Chapter, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services of the Health Sciences in Bethesda MD, and is in private practice in Greenbelt, MD.

Dr. Thomas shared  the most recent medical knowledge on positive steps that patients can take to better control their lupus and improve their quality of life and live longer. We were asked by many people who were unable to attend the conference to provide a recording of this presentation. We recorded it using an iPad so the quality isn’t professional but if you turn up the volume it works well.

This is a must watch for people who are affected by lupus as it give important information about living well with the disease.

The Gut-Lupus Link: How Gut Bacteria May Impact Disease Development and Activity
New research findings offer interesting insights around the potential gut-lupus connection. The study’s results indicate people with lupus have reduced species diversity in their guts, meaning they have fewer types or strains of bacteria than those without lupus. In fact, the study’s subjects with higher disease activity (more severe or frequent flares) had the fewest types of bacteria species present.

Study Finds Blood Levels of Plaquenil May Be Important Indicator of Eye Disease Risk
New research finds that measuring blood levels of the medication hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) in people with lupus may be an effective way to predict risk of retinopathy, a disease which results in impaired or complete loss of vision.
