This week I ask everyone, whatever your age, to consider carefully a wonderful new opportunity to enhance your spiritual growth and contribute to the parish. Even though we haven’t finished our current planning process, it is already clear we must plan for the religious and spiritual formation of our children. All you have to do is look around the pews, and you can see that the number of babies and children among us is rapidly increasing!
We are actively exploring the “Catechesis of the Good Shepherd” (CGS), a well-respected children’s program already established at a number of Jesuit parishes in the Midwest, including Gesu Detroit, the first CGS program in Michigan.
CGS is for children ages 3 through 12. It is founded on an understanding that there is already a deep bond between God and each child. Based on the Montessori approach to education and drawing on the most essential elements of scripture and liturgy, CGS helps children to name, explore and deepen this relationship as the foundation for their lives. CGS takes place in a specially prepared room known as “the atrium,” a spiritual environment rather than a classroom, where children work with hands-on materials at their own pace. The adult catechist’s role is to prepare the atrium, present materials that call for the child’s response, then step back, allowing God and the child to work together. We would like to begin training catechists for our parish now. Level I training (for ages 3-6) will begin its monthly sessions in Detroit on September 7. Our parish has applied for a grant to cover the cost. If this stirs your interest even a little, please contact me so that we can discuss it. All are welcome to attend the first session (Sept. 7) on an exploratory basis, without making a commitment to the entire training program.
Anyone can apply; the training is open to both men and women, and all ages – young adult singles, couples and parents, retirees and empty nesters. I even know of a teenager who is taking the training because she enjoyed the program so much as a child herself. Everyone I know personally who has done the training has found it to be an extraordinary, spiritually enriching experience.
