FACILITATOR FEATURE: THE VALUE OF IN-PERSON
I had the chance of facilitating an in-person tween talk with another facilitator in July. We traveled to Shannon, MS, and facilitated the lesson to F.A.I.T.H. Prep Academy. I met some wonderful people that invited us to come back anytime. I must say, my overall experience was great. I connected with the parents that I facilitated the lesson to that treated me with the utmost respect and who were very engaging with the lesson. I discussed and facilitated, “Comprehensive Sex Education for Middle School Families”. The topics discussed in this lesson were: reproduction and sexually transmitted infections (STI) facts, consequences of risky sexual behavior, and pregnancy prevention (including abstinence and contraceptives).
It is important to have open and honest conversations with both parents and children about these topics to prevent misconceptions, have accurate and safer knowledge to make healthy decisions with relationships, and help set the tone for parents to have easier conversations about sex at home with their children. The in-person session was important because of the hands-on experience, engagement from both the parents, children, facilitators, and it gave me the chance to build rapport and trust, show dedication, motivation, and the time spent was valuable because you got to establish a stronger relationship with the parents and children because in-person meetings can be more focused and productive than online meetings.
