Awesome Fundraiser Raises Funds for CMHA York Region
Awesome Fundraiser Raises Funds for CMHA York Region
Judy Brunton has some very personal reasons for passionately working to raise funds for CMHA York and South Simcoe. She had successfully raised over $40,000 for another organization in the past, but when she heard about Ride Don't Hide, she "knew instantly this is what I am meant to be doing." Besides the fact that her eight year old son would rather ride his bike than walk, she wanted to honour her sister who suffers from a number of mental illnesses. She also wanted to raise funds in memory of her cousin who passed away from depression.
"My goal is to raise as much money as possible and to help end the stigma around mental illnesses. I’m always thinking of ways to raise even more – on a 24/7 basis.  CMHA is in my head all the time; it is my passion, pleasure and addiction to do what I can for this amazing organization," Judy says.
This past spring Judy's efforts were rewarded when she received a $1000 grant from the Newmarket branch of the Awesome Foundation. Judy applied for the grant so that she could help raise funds for CMHA's new youth mobile health service, MOBYSS. Locally, the Awesome Foundation grants are awarded to ideas making a difference for youth in Newmarket in education, employment and the community.
"I was so gratefully appreciative that they chose my initiative as the winner for that month," she says.
Judy will be using the funds toward supporting CMHA in two ways. First, she has a goal of raising $5,000 for Ride Don't Hide in which she and her son participated on June 21st.  As can be seen on her website,, she is very close to reaching her goal. Second, Judy is planning a One Stop Shop event on November 7, 2015, from 1 to 5 pm, at the Newmarket Community Centre at 200 Doug Duncan Drive.
The One Stop Shopping event in support of CMHA will have about 40 vendors for visitors to shop from and about 200 silent auction items for people to bid on.  There will be plenty of fun for kids and the young at heart. For a very family friendly ticket price, people can participate in a range of fun activities including face painting, a candy buffet table and a photo booth. There will be a balloon and a henna artist, a food truck, and a magician entertaining the guests. Judy hopes to bring in about 500 guests and raise about $6,000.
Now that is truly AWESOME Judy. Our sincere gratitude goes out to you.
