Community Employment: Stories of Success
Local businesses are hiring and including people with disabilities in the process.

Recently, Waverly Health Center’s Nutrition Services Manager Kathy Bartels contacted TLC about filling a part-time position in her department. That’s when Kathy met Haley. Haley began her journey to community employment with TLC even before graduating high school. Haley participated in work experience at Trinkets & Togs and after graduation worked with staff to improve her skills and gain valuable experience both at the thrift store and in the community. When Haley learned about the opportunity to interview for the position with the Waverly Health Center, she was very excited. And when she was offered the position, Haley and her family were thrilled! TLC provided job coaching to Haley as she started the job, assisting her through orientation and learning her new job. (See more of Haley’s story on our YouTube Channel: Haley's Story)

Just down the street on the campus of Wartburg College, you will find a crew of TLC clients working in the Mensa Cafeteria. After completing a 4-week internship with Wartburg College’s Dining Services, the work crew was asked to stay on for the remainder of the school year. Each weekday, 4 clients along with a support staff are working the dish line and keeping the dining room clean for over 1500 students on campus. Wartburg’s Assistant Vice President for Dining and Retail Services Margaret Empie says, “We have been appreciative and delighted with the high quality work being done.” Troy and his fellow crew members are not only gaining valuable work experience and earning wages, they are paving the way for people with disabilities; they are breaking down barriers and reducing stigma related to hiring people with disabilities.

A Night of Fun, Fashions and Fundraising!

On October 10th, staff, clients and community members gathered at the Waverly Country Club for our 12th Annual Trinkets Togs Fashion Show Fundraiser. What began as a way to showcase our staff and clients, has grown to become quite an event! Those in attendance enjoyed the musical talents of Plezant Company and Emma Withers, and showed their support of the mission of The Larrabee Center, Inc. Through boutique sales, raffle tickets and direct donations, we raised over $1700, all of which will directly benefit the services provided to clients right in our own community!

We would also like to recognize the Waverly Golf & Country Club for donating the use of their venue, to Travis Toliver, Waverly Chamber Executive Director, for emceeing our event, and to Morgan LaRue with Photography by Christine for capturing the fun & fashions. Thank you to friends and businesses who generously donated items for our raffle: Waverly Health Center, Wartburg Symphony, Wild Carrot, Word of Mouth Catering & Café, Meyer Pharmacy, Jill Wiegmann, and Isle Casino Hotel.

Together, we truly are enriching lives and enriching our community!

Staff Spotlight
Beth Eilderts

A graduate of Wartburg College and a Dumont native, Beth started with TLC while completing her Social Work degree. In 2011, she began as a support staff working with individuals in their homes and the community, quickly moving into her current role of Employment Services Assistant. Beth works with clients to develop individualized outcome plans based on their strengths and interests for the purpose of placing them in jobs in the community.  Beth’s favorite part of her job is seeing client successes. “What motivates me is doing the best job I can do for our clients, our staff, and our stakeholders.  Seeing the clients get motivated to work and try things they haven’t done before motivates me to try to help them as much as I can.” Beth is most excited about the agency helping clients get jobs. “I think we are moving in a great direction with our employment services. We are on track with national trends that will allow our agency to continue to be successful in helping clients gain experiences that will change their lives.”
Thank you Beth for your dedication to our mission!
