A Year of Changes: A Letter from our Executive Director

2016 has been a year full of changes and challenges. The year brought the privatization of Medicaid from the state run Iowa Medicaid Enterprise to three private managed care organizations as well as the alignment of the State’s Employment Redesign with Federal Employment First Principles.  The Larrabee Center has not seen such a dramatic system change since transitioning from the care facility to the community back in the late 1990’s. I continue to be impressed with our loyal and dedicated staff as they roll up their sleeves to meet these challenges while providing quality services under a difficult and uncertain environment.

I remain pleased with our progress and would like to thank all staff, volunteers, clients, and board members for their work, support, and participation towards fulfilling the mission of assisting persons with disabilities and the elderly to become or remain valued members of their community. The important and life-changing work is witnessed everyday through the progress and smiles of the clients. I would also like to thank donors and shoppers at Trinkets & Togs, and individuals, businesses and foundations who make donations and provide critical support to our agency. Together, we are impacting the lives of many in Bremer, Butler, and Grundy Counties.

Looking at the year ahead, I am confident that with our mission as our guiding star, we will take our challenges and turn them into opportunities to enrich lives and enrich the community.

Clark Wilharm, Executive Director

Article ImageStaff Spotlight: Helen

With 25 years of loyal and dedicated service under her belt, Helen has seen many changes, challenges and successes over the years, both for our agency and for the clients she serves. Helen started as a cook and dietary manager when TLC still operated the care facility and moved to home and community-based services when the care facility closed. Helen attributes her commitment and longevity with the agency to being able to directly work with the clients and watch them grow in their abilities. Helen has seen the impact services have had on the clients we serve firsthand. “I have seen clients who were very dependent and now hold down a job in the community.” Even with all the change and challenges we have seen, Helen has remain dedicated to helping our clients be valued members of the community and we are proud to have her on the team.

Client Spotlight: Kris

Kris is working with TLC Employment Support Services to assist her to reach her long term goal of working in a cafeteria or restaurant.  She is a graduate of W-SR High School and Waverly native who has always had an interest in food service. With TLC support, she has had the opportunity to gain experience in an internship at Pizza Ranch and a current work crew with Wartburg College Dining Services.  Her experiences have also included working at Trinkets & Togs thrift store and America’s Best Value/Red Fox Inn.  Through these experiences, Kris has gained connections with community members as well as her coworkers while building her resume.  Kris is diligent and takes pride in her work.  In her spare time, Kris enjoys reading and has a passion for helping animals, especially cats.
