Volunteers on a Mission
Part of Something Special

Regular shoppers at Trinkets & Togs in Grundy Center are turning into volunteers. Mark helps out 3 times a week and says it makes him feel like he’s contributing to the community.  Elaine works with linens and toys 6 days per week and enjoys working with the staff and interacting with the customers. Jeff comes in 2-3 times per weeks and enjoys testing the electrical items. Jana donates her time each week working with the clothing donations. Linda Hughes, Program Director says, “ I can’t say enough good things about this group of volunteers.  They come in with smiling faces, work hard, and are willing to pitch in wherever we need them—moving goods and keeping the store looking great.” Volunteers are essential in providing much needed support to the staff of just eight in the thrift store.

Lori Shepherd, Retail Services Manager says the volunteers are great and is hopeful to start having volunteers in our Waverly location. “We have an average of  65 donors a day and move over 1,200 items into the Waverly store daily. With more clients taking  advantage of employment opportunities based outside of Trinkets & Togs, we are seeing a gap that we feel could be filled by local volunteers.”  Volunteers are needed to process donations, sort clothing, assist clerks, maintain areas in the store. If you or your group are interested in volunteering on a regular basis—weekly or monthly, contact Lori today at (319) 352-8029 email at Lori@larrabeecenter.org.

Staff Spotlight
Retail Services Assistant
Darleen Lindahl

Darleen has been with agency since 2002 when she started as a store clerk in our Waverly Trinkets & Togs store. Over the years she has also worked as a direct support staff in both the community support services and employment services. For the past few years, Darleen has filled the role of Retail Services Assistant, which certainly keeps her busy. Managing the flow of goods from the donation area to the store is just one of her priorities. She also works closely with our Retail Services Manager to track and trend sales in the store. With her years of retail background combined with her strong dedication to the mission of The Larrabee Center, Darleen is continually motivated by seeing the difference TLC makes in the lives of clients. “Seeing the clients succeed is my favorite part of the job.” She feels especially grateful for the support from the community. “It’s amazing! We wouldn’t be able to do this without the wonderful donors and shoppers who support us and believe in our mission.”
